Since June, Egypt has detained 151 Egyptians and 540 foreigners in the campaign, with a fourth phase beginning Saturday. The crackdown comes amid a gold-mining boom in northern Sudan driven by the war, with much of the gold crossing into Egypt through the porous border, which includes the disputed Halayeb Triangle. In October, Sudanese rights group Emergency Lawyers accused Egyptโs air force of carrying out a strike inside Sudan that killed at least 72 miners.
