Interesting wrinkle with potential downstream effects for media rights in 2027. MLB programming becomes an increasingly important driver of primetime viewing during the summer months @Octagon

27% opening weekend bump for the @premierleague on @usasports. We've seen similar increases following major tournaments in the past...can this become the norm? @Octagon

If one of the legacy broadcasters is left without a chair when the NFL’s media-rights music stops, college rights available in the early 2030s could be perfectly positioned to fill the void.
Fox won't enter into early negotiations with the NFL, a decision that has sweeping implications for college sports. (link below) "Now, what the NFL takes is a ‘known-unknown.’" "You can see the avalanche coming."

All 4 major legacy media DTC segments are now profitable — Peacock just joined the club in Q2. But the paths differ: Paramount+ (+21.3% revenue CAGR) and Peacock (+38.7%) grew into profitability. WBD (+4.9%) and Disney (+2.9%) got there on cost discipline.

I think this is so interesting. Weekends are the big OOH winner - makes sense intuitively, but neat to see it presented like this.
The FIFA World Cup brought fans together like few other events can — among recent championships, only the Super Bowl drew a higher out-of-home viewership share than the World Cup Final. Soccer’s communal nature is further underscored by UEFA Champions League’s out-of-home share.

Hydration breaks - not the end of the world! Turns out, we're pretty ok with commercials during live sports. Thanks to Austin for including my thoughts. Great work by @andrewelkadi for nailing down this analysis.

Nice use of minute by minute viewership numbers here. Hydration breaks nowhere near the audience loss of a typical halftime break.
Lots of discussion about FOX’s lucrative decision to show commercials during hydration breaks at the World Cup. Octagon analysis suggests only a small percentage of viewers tune-out during the ads and that viewership recovers after the return to play.

League and network execs always want a Game 7, but the 2026 NBA Finals didn’t need to go the distance to put up monster numbers
The '26 #NBAFinals finished as the most-watched since '98 & the most EVER on ABC! 🏆 Last Saturday's Knicks vs Spurs Game 5 on ABC drew 24.5M avg. viewers 🏀 Largest NBA Finals Gm 5 audience since '98 🏀 Up 157% from last year's Gm 5 🏀 Peak: 33M More: bit.ly/4uDnaNW

The WCWS gets underway today in Oklahoma City with 2 games on ESPN and 2 games on ESPN2, plus ABC coverage coming over the weekend. The tournament has quietly become one of the best viewership stories in women’s sports.

Quick math here: $50m/year for 8 games = $6.25m/game Based on this year's linear viewership & estimated rights fee, @Octagon has this year's First Four games valued at an average of $6.02m/game. Factoring in escalators + sponsorship categories, pricing aligns w/ current deal.

8 *additional* games, I should clarify!

Cool visual. Credit to NBC for growing the @KentuckyDerby audience throughout the broadcast.
As @NBCSports gears up for another Kentucky Derby, here’s a look at how audience builds on the network throughout the afternoon

If past years are any indication, ESPN will garner more viewers than its sister network ABC tonight. The opposite is the trend for MNF games simulcast on both networks. Perhaps the studio show nature of draft coverage shepherds viewers to the longtime home of SportsCenter.
1st Round NFL Draft viewership since the record Covid year ⬇️ 2025: 13.6 million 2024: 12.1 million 2023: 11.4 million 2022: 10 million 2021: 12.5 million 2020: 15.6 million How many people will watch tonight? ABC, ESPN, NFL Network + streaming options.

Cool to see the viewership relationship between the @MarchMadnessWBB National Championship Game and the @WNBA Draft. Consistent 6-7x multiple between the two events. Great work here from @andrewelkadi @Octagon

The general assumption is that Nielsen's Big Data + Panel bumps up viewership, but that wasn't the case for this year's @CBBCrown Final, which saw a -9% decrease compared to the old Panel Only methodology. Either way you slice it, congrats on a strong year 2, @CBBonFOX

We now have 2 examples in the last 6 months of Tier 1 properties seeing an initial viewership increase in their debut on a streamer. Nice one @andrewelkadi
Moving to streaming from cable once again delivers for a major property Ditching free-to-air for streaming has historically been a less reliable bet

Do we REALLY love #MarchMadness upsets? @Octagon research suggests an inverse relationship between average per game viewership and the number of upset during the first weekend of both @MarchMadnessMBB and @MarchMadnessWBB
