As a college soph, I was asked to throw BP to the @Reds in 1975. I was nervous and wild. I drilled Bench with my first pitch, he got angry and vacated the cage. Perez said he wasn't getting in the box. Pete jumps in the batter's box and says, "C'mon kid, let's see what you got." He was the only one to hit off me that day. If not for Pete I would have been so embarrassed for getting kicked off the mound after only one pitch.
