I genuinely think Caitlyn was one of the few people who made Matt feel like he didn’t have to hide behind a face to be loved. And that’s what makes their relationship so tragic.
Remember when she asked to see the REAL him? Matt expected disgust, rejection or fear, but she didn’t look away. She saw what he had become and still showed him kindness. For someone who had spent so much of his life desperate for acceptance, that moment meant everything.
But here’s the controversial part: Caitlyn gave Matt the acceptance he had always wanted, and he still wasn’t satisfied.
His greed, vengeance and growing obsession eventually consumed whatever genuine connection they had. He went from wanting her to see him to wanting to possess her, even going as far as killing John and wearing his face to get closer to her.
That’s the tragedy of Matt Hagen. He finally found someone who could look at the real him without turning away, but his desperation to be loved made him destroy the very person who gave him that acceptance. 💀 #Clayface
Caitlyn asked let her see him "the real him" and she didn't looked away or judge him any sort of way that create a bond for him. Throughout the movie, this bond get stronger, closer from gentle and caring but ultimately end up as his downfall due to his greed, vengeance and love turned #obsession #clayface

clayface spoilers
matt rehearsing the “i love you” line in the beginning and mentioning that “people say i love you without saying it” was such a clever way to explicitly convey that, later, when he tells caitlyn he loves her it’s no longer the same matt
