17 YEARS WAITING FOR AN ASYLUM DECISION! K.E.Y.A., an asylum seeker from Sudan’s conflict-affected Abyei region, applied for asylum in Cyprus in 2009. In 2014, the European Commission @EUCYPRUS closed his complaint (CHAP(2014)01527) following a written commitment by the Cypriot Government to examine his application without delay. Yet, 17 years later, his application remains pending. We have been unofficially informed of alleged instructions from the political leadership of the responsible ministry not to examine asylum applications submitted by Sudanese nationals. Does Cyprus genuinely guarantee fair asylum procedures when an asylum seeker has been waiting 17 years for a decision @NickAIoannides? We call on the competent authorities to examine K.E.Y.A.’s asylum application immediately, ensuring full respect for his rights and Cyprus’s legal obligations @UN_HRC @UNHCRCyprus @ecre @AristosDamianou

Rule of Law… depending on who you are! Remember the serious tractor accident last May in the village of Kapileio? Ø The injured worker was an undocumented migrant from Vietnam. Ø The Police not only showed remarkable “understanding,” but dragged out the investigation for as long as possible, giving time for “other solutions” to be found. Ø The Labour Inspection Department assigned the investigation to an officer who is away on leave — perhaps hoping that, here too, time might eventually provide a “solution”… Ø The employer, a local powerbroker with access to the government and the governing-opposition party, found the solution. And just like that — no harm, no foul: The migrant was apparently not his employee at all. He simply decided, entirely on his own initiative, to start the tractor and ended up seriously injuring his legs — presumably out of his love for the trees… Nevertheless, out of the goodness of his heart, the employer supported him and, among other things, bought him a ticket so that today he could “return” to Vietnam… And now that the migrant — and the only eyewitness — is leaving, the investigations by both the Police and the Labour Inspection Department will presumably be… quietly filed away! @picum_ngo

A Domestic Worker who: - Works from 6:30 am to 9:30 pm, 6 days a week instead of 40 hours written in her contract, - has to live and sleep in the same room with the 38-year-old son of my employer with mental disability and she is told by the employer that it is her responsibility to look after him during the night. As a result she wakes up every night when he wakes up either because he has sleeping difficulties or he needs to go for example to the toilet, - is getting paid 350 euros per month instead of 400 euros written in her contract, cash instead Instead of via a bank transfer, as foreseen by the law, - doesn’t know whether her employer pays her social insurance or not and - who paid 3500 euros for her Airplane ticket and the administrative costs for her entry visa despite the fact that according to the Law the employer is responsible for these expenses… When she asked for “a release paper” in order to be able to find new employer, her employer became very upset, rude and aggressive: She took the mirror from her hands and tried to hit her with it and told her that she will never give her "release" and that she "shuts up" otherwise she will send her the next day back to her country because this is her country and has the power because she knows immigration people! On another note, the Human Rights and Equality Committee of the Parliament is discussing this period the violence against women without the presence of organizations that are systematically and specifically concerned with violence against immigrants in Cyprus.

50 people were deceived by a private employment agency and paid 10,000 euros each to come to Cyprus to work for 1,200 euros per month. When they arrived here, they discovered it was a scam and reported it to the police, who after 6 months of investigation decided to recognize 10 out of the fifty as victims of trafficking… The authorities consider the remaining 40 not their concern! Among other things, they received a message from the welfare services that they must leave the housing provided to them, despite the fact that they still don't have permission from Migration to work for another employer, nor help from the labor office to find an eligible employer

According to Trump the central government can only take care of the military protection of the country ... Any other "care" should be offered by states via taxation of it's citizens!

Is it a reception center? Is it a detention center? Does it operates under a specific legislation or outside the law? According to the far right subminister for migration and international protection @NickAIoannides: When we have reception centres, these people will not go to towns and villages to stay, they will stay in their reception centres, which have very good conditions and work according to European standards. They are from India and not Syria. Students and labourers with valid resident permits... Arrested and deported without any chance to appeal or challenge the violation of their rights. There is no rule of Law any more for migrants and refugees in Cyprus...
