CPJ’s new Impunity Action List sets out the essential steps for authorities to champion justice for journalists. #EndImpunity More than 1,050 journalists have been murdered since CPJ began keeping records in 1992, and impunity remains rampant. ⤵️ cpj.org/2026/10/championing-…

The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the detention of Russian-Israeli journalist Andrey Khrzhanovskiy, known professionally as Andrey X, and U.S. journalist Jasper Nathaniel by Israeli forces near Umm Al-Khair, in the occupied West Bank. “CPJ demands the immediate release of the journalist known as Andrey X and his colleague Jasper Nathaniel. Israeli police arrested the two in Umm Al-Khair, near Hebron, shortly after they were physically assaulted by Israeli settlers. The arrest followed reports that Israeli settlers also stole Andrey X's phone, pepper-sprayed Nathaniel, and attacked journalist Adele Shoko. Journalists who are victims of violence must receive medical care; not be treated as suspects while their attackers remain free.” — Sara Qudah, MENA Regional Director @infinite_jaz @the_andrey_x @AdeleShoko

#DRC 🇨🇩 CPJ calls on DRC authorities to allow journalists to report freely on the war in the east of the country, after the media regulator banned the press from giving a “platform” to a new rebel coalition headed by former President Joseph Kabila.

I’ve so much admiration for Lina Attalah and her colleagues in Egypt. They set an example for journalistic courage and independence that all of us can learn from.
CPJ condemns the conviction of Lina Attalah, editor-in-chief of the independent Egyptian news outlet @MadaMasr, on charges of running an unlicensed website. We call on Egyptian authorities to reverse the ruling, release the journalist immediately, and end their escalating campaign against independent journalism. “Lina Attalah and Mada Masr are among the most prominent voices in Egypt’s independent media landscape, providing critical reporting on issues of public interest that might otherwise go unreported. If Egypt can put in custody one of its most respected editors and shut down her newsroom, no independent journalist in the country is safe. Attalah must be released immediately, and Mada Masr must be allowed to keep reporting.” — Sara Qudah, MENA Regional Director Read CPJ's statement ⤵️ cpj.org/2026/10/cpj-outraged…

🚨Tomorrow, Lina Atallah, in her capacity as editor-in-chief of @MadaMasr faces trial in a case that could result in the closure of the vocal independent news site. Egypt’s authorities are targeting Mada Masr solely for its fearless reporting, as part of a wider crackdown on the few remaining independent media outlets in the country. Under international human rights law, the closure of a media outlet for operating without the government’s authorization is an excessive and disproportionate sanction incompatible with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) - a treaty Egypt has ratified. Authorities must immediately drop the charges and grant Mada Masr the licence it has repeatedly requested since 2018.

#Kazakhstan 🇰🇿: CPJ welcomes a government ruling that a police travel ban against journalist Lukpan Akhmedyarov is unlawful. Kazakh police should swiftly revoke the ban and end their baseless criminal investigations into Akhmedyarov for alleged distribution of "false information". Over the past 2 years Akhmedyarov, who was shot and stabbed in a near-fatal attack in 2012, has faced two "false information" investigations in Kazakhstan over his pioneering reporting on Russia's war in Ukraine, as well as criminal charges in Russia. He and other leading Kazakh journalists have faced relentless and multifaceted persecution in recent months and must be allowed to work freely. cpj.org/2026/08/from-prosecu…

#Bulgaria 🇧🇬: CPJ is alarmed that an officer of Bulgaria’s National Service for Protection violently pushed PIK reporter Sonya Koltuklieva to the ground in Sofia on October 22 as she attempted to question the speaker of parliament as she got into her car. Koltuklieva was injured and the security guards left without helping her. Bulgarian authorities must ensure a thorough, transparent investigation and hold those responsible to full account. Journalists must be able to question officials without fear for their safety. #Bulgaria #PressFreedom Read more ⬇️ bta.bg/en/news/bulgaria/1230…

#Serbia 🇷🇸: CPJ calls on Serbian authorities to ensure that journalists can report safely throughout Sunday’s parliamentary election, and the period that follows. During the election campaign, journalists have been pushed and hit by police officers, had phones seized or cameras struck, and been prevented from covering campaign events. “The attacks we have seen during this election campaign are a warning of what could happen on October 25 and afterwards. Serbian authorities must ensure that police protect journalists rather than obstruct them and that local and international reporters can access election-related events. All reported attacks and irregularities must be promptly investigated,” said Attila Mong, CPJ’s Europe program coordinator. "Journalists must be able to document what happens around the country without fear. Their ability to do so is an essential part of a free and fair election," Mong said. #Kenya 🇰🇪 CPJ urges Kenyan authorities to initiate criminal proceedings against police officers implicated in the deadly shooting of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif four years ago. Police initially said Sharif’s killing was a case of mistaken identity. However, subsequent investigations, including by the Pakistani government, raised questions about a narrative “full of contradictions, concluding that “assassination cannot be ruled out.” And while the courts have found the killing constituted a fundamental breach of constitutional rights, they have stopped short of directing criminal proceedings in the case, arguing this would constitute undue interference with independent prosecutorial authorities. The final domestic appeal in this case was dismissed by the Supreme Court in July 2026. Sharif’s case is emblematic of the fear experienced by exiled journalists in Kenya as cases of transnational repression rise. Failure to deliver justice for Sharif sends a message that no journalist is safe in Kenya. Read more: cpj.org/data/people/arshad-s…
