Mark Carney is giving a tax break to artists and thanks to the $6 billion he’s giving to CSIS he’ll be able to make sure your art doesn’t say anything mean about Israel.
In Budget 2026, we’re backing the Canadian artists who tell our stories. That means if you’re a Canadian artist, you won’t pay tax on up to $45,000 of income derived from your creative work.

Vassy: Why is that (investment mega-deduction) inherently a bad thing? Avi Lewis: Does creating more wealth in Canada trickle down to actually benefit all of us? We've been pursuing this fairy tale since Brian Mulroney in the 1980s. It has never worked.

Avi Lewis: "There's about $4b over 10 years for renewable energy. That is a speck of dust on the page compared to the price of one pipeline, which we are on the hook for, which will be $50 - 80 billion. It's irresponsible."

Watching Florida Democrats winning in districts that were gerrymandered by the Republicans is inspiring. This post is about Alberta.

The Mississippi Senate race is an extraordinary story. If you dig up the history between the two Scott Colom (Dem) vs Cindy Hyde (GOP). This guy Colom was minding his own business and was on track to be a district judge (local bi partisan choice btw) under Biden. But Hyde Smith the current Senator wouldn't give her approval, she blocked Colom's nomination and that was the end of his district judge path. So last year Colom decided to run against Hyde Smith. He is within striking distance of becoming the first black Senator for Mississippi since 1871, and the first Dem Senator since 1989.
Extraordinarily, Scott Colom is on track to win the uncalled Senate race in Mississippi (the last margin I saw was 39 votes but the remaining count favours him, as Kornacki shows in this clip). Colom is a black attorney who ran on a "Common Sense" economic-populist platform aimed at daily life: gas, groceries, healthcare and closing hospitals, plus Medicaid expansion. He won many switchers, and the Republican vote collapsed. That’s how a race which was classed likely or safe Republican until the final week was flipped. This will turn out to be a more than ten-point swing in a poor red state in the Deep South. Swing voters are more volatile than ever, especially when they’re economically hard pressed. They respond to common sense, and they’ve decided Trump and the Republicans are not on their side. Fierce attacks on Colom’s socially liberal track record on some issues didn’t dent him. He said he was Christian and has always been “pro-life”, but that he would trust his daughters to make their own decisions.

I know a lot of folks are talking about the election results, but this tweet, from a sitting @VP, is stunning. The decision to go to war is the most solemn responsibility that a President and Vice President have as leaders. So for you to reduce it to a simple political calculation while we still have 50,000 troops in the Middle East, is one of the most crass, cynical things I've seen. You and President Trump got us into this war, without a clear objective and without regard for the will of the American people. It's cost us American lives and billions of dollars of American treasure, with no end in sight. Last night, the American people delivered a crystal-clear message about the mismanagement of this war, and what it has done to our pocketbooks. Whether you supported the war or simply failed to stop it, your job is not to try and cover yourself, but to get us out of it.
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Mr. @PeteHegseth, You were a weekend TV host. You could have built a long, comfortable career in entertainment. Instead you chose to be Secretary of War. On the first day of your war, a Tomahawk hit a girls' elementary school in Minab and killed 168 children in their classrooms. You called it "unfortunate," kept preaching "maximum lethal violence," and your office reportedly sat on the findings until after the midterms. The midterms are over. A UN inquiry has already spoken of war crimes, and the investigations are only beginning. The blood of those children is on your hands. So tell me: was it worth it? A couple of years with a plaque on your door, in exchange for a lifetime of fleeing justice and a name your own children will be ashamed to carry? History has a long memory. So do the mothers of Minab.
