So the log_softmax bug arxiv.org/abs/2610.31642 that's been making the rounds. TorchLean also had the same problem (fixed in github.com/lean-dojo/TorchLe…). How come? This example is pretty illustrative of the proper mindset you need when working on formal verification. 🧵

Happy to announce that our work on quantitative verification got the distinguished paper award at ATVA 2026. Looking forward to visiting Hong Kong this December! Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2609.20037

anthropic.com/research/forma…

My view, which I've publicly held for a long time, is that nobody actually wants to do proofs about their programs (except a tiny but vocal minority). People instead want *confidence* in their programs. Finally, we can focus on the human factors we've neglected all along.
One heartening thing about the @AnthropicAI + @theoremlabs verification work: almost every PL researcher on my feed is excited about the future and seeing years of research put to use. Quite a contrast to the “AI is taking our jobs” mood I’ve seen in other communities.

New on our Frontier Red Team blog: using Claude to formally verify software at large scale. Formal verification can prove that code is free of certain bugs, but historically it has only been feasible for small codebases (or required a lot of expert time). With AI models, however, this is beginning to change. In collaboration with @theoremlabs, we used Claude to prove security properties in over one hundred real-world open-source libraries over the span of a few weeks. You won't believe how many people told me over the past 10+ years that proof assistants would never achieve widespread use, and that my work was therefore not useful. Ignore people who discount entire fields of research because they are hard. All the more motivation for research

From Formal Methods to Fuzzing and Back Invited paper for my upcoming talk at FSTTCS, on how I started in FM (intellectually mind bending bug would not scale!), moved mainly into fuzzing (so much fun!), and am now getting right back into FM thanks to AI. doc.ic.ac.uk/~afd/papers/202…

note.com/katobungen/n/n0655f…

Convex analysis meets model checking🧐 Probabilistic model checking can be seen as set inclusion test between a safe region and the achievability set to failure states in MDP. Using convex analysis, we propose a computationally efficient query. arxiv.org/abs/2610.17541

I put Tex2Lean to extract and formalize the algorithm presented in the OpenAI's paper on counting common bases of matroids, and 48 hours, we have a formal pseudocode whose correctness is proven. 1/

Replying to @yminsky @dhh
I'm hopeful that every module can come with a spec and dedicated educational material for understanding that spec and the important parts of its implementation.
