Over the past 30 days, most of our area has received lower-than-normal amounts of precipitation. However, rain begins moving back into the basin starting this weekend.

🧵And to think it all began with just a few holes in the ground over the summer... Today was a PERFECT day to officially welcome Nelson County to the Mesonet family! Our team is grateful for site host Brad Metcalf, @EmergencyN35406 and their willingness to host today's ceremony.

"Sun dogs" (aka parhelions) happen when light from the sun is refracted by the ice crystals that make up high clouds. In rarer cases, a 22° halo can surround the sun. Sun dogs are often at brightest when the sun is just above the horizon, which was the case for many Sunday. #kywx

🌤️High cirrus clouds in the upper levels of the atmosphere helped create "sun dogs" late Sunday afternoon just prior to sunset! Classic examples of this phenomenon were captured by webcams near Marion in the west and near Bedford in Trimble County in the north-central region...

🗼🙌Big shout-out to the 6th graders from Austin-Tracy Elementary in Barren County! It was a perfect morning to show these students around our site at @WKUAgriculture Farm to show them how we measure and collect weather data.

Most of the region can expect a light 0.5-1.0" of rain over the next 2 days. No river flooding is forecast, but today's stronger storms could bring 1-2+" of rain and brief flash flooding to isolated spots, especially in IN. Clear, dry, and cooler weather arrives by Saturday!

Relatively quiet weather conditions today will give way to cold front sagging into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible across much of the region, especially across the lower Ohio Valley, which may lead to localized flash flooding.

It's the middle of October AND the middle of meteorological #autumn, but these maps, especially for temperature & heat indices, look more like those from August! In the west, muggy dew points in the low 70s combined with air temps makes it feel like the upper 90s for some! #kywx

🌠If you were up in the predawn hours, you might have seen a bright, glowing streak just above the eastern horizon. This came from the Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket, which was launched at 6:33am ET/5:33am CT at Cape Canaveral in Florida. (1/2)
