Reading the Qur’an, one thing that stands out for me is how extensively it addresses every aspect of human existence, with particular emphasis on monotheism, righteousness, morality and our relationships with one another. However, while reflecting on these verses, some disturbing questions crossed my mind and I couldn't help but ask. "Why do we often talk about polygamy, warfare, inheritance, punishments and other subjects that often generate heated conversations?" Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting that these subjects should be ignored neither am I saying that it deserves less attention. I'm more concerned or should I say, questioning the excessive attention they receive at the expense of other equally important teachings. "Why do we spend so much time debating what the Qur’an permits and prohibits but pay little attention to what it asks us to become?" "Why don't we talk more about the verses that teaches us to be compassionate, just, forgiving, patient and conscious of our responsibilities towards one another?" "What about the reminders that righteousness is not something we profess, but something we must demonstrate through action?" Perhaps, the shift we need is spending less time merely discussing the Qur’an and more time allowing its teachings to reflect in the way we live.
