The newly crowned Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I entering Mucwa Rukurato, the Tooro Kingdom's supreme council chamber in Fort Portal, Uganda, for an official meeting.
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, previously Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma and a former journalist, was selected by the Babiito royal clan, endorsed by the Rukurato, and gazetted by the Ugandan government in October 2026 after the August death of his cousin, Omukama Oyo Rukidi IV.
The footage captures council members and dignitaries standing as the Omukama proceeds to the dais area, highlighting formal proceedings in one of Uganda's restored traditional kingdoms.
Rukurato(more fully Orukurato Orukuru or Orukurato Orukuru Orw’Ensanju) is the supreme council or parliament of the Tooro Kingdom in western Uganda.
It serves as the kingdom’s main deliberative body, handling cultural, administrative, social, and traditional matters (such as succession, governance, education, and community issues). Meetings are held at the Rukurato chambers in Mucwa (also spelled Muchwa), Fort Portal.
In the local Rutooro language, the term refers to this great/supreme council or assembly. It was formalized during the reign of Omukama Rukidi III (1928–1965) and continues as a key traditional institution alongside the Omukama (king).
