One question every coach should regularly ask:
“What’s it like to be led by me?”
Not, “what do I intend?”
Consider the actual experience of the people you lead.

If we coach every player towards the same movement pattern, we may unintentionally remove solutions that are functional for that individual.

Here’s a name you’ll be hearing about for some time; 2030 OF Brayden Nims (FL). Young for the grade, went 3-3 tonight with a pair of smoked balls, including this single to LF. Huge bat speed, moves very well on bases. @Florida_PG #PGElite

Athlete: Coach… I think I want to quit.
Coach: Okay. Then let’s talk about why.
Athlete: I’m tired. All the early mornings, the pain, the pressure. Sometimes I wake up and wonder what I’m even doing this for.
Coach: That’s not quitting. That’s being human. Doubt shows up when you’re close to something that matters.
Athlete: But I’m not even sure I’m good enough. I look around and see people stronger, faster… happier.
Coach: Comparison is a liar. It shows you everyone’s surface but hides their struggle. You don’t need to be better than them. You need to be better than yesterday.
Athlete: What if I never win? What if I give everything and still fall short?
Coach: Then you’ll walk away with something most never touch—truth. The kind you only find when you’ve emptied yourself for something bigger than comfort.
Athlete: So… you think I should keep going?
Coach: I think you already know the answer. You wouldn’t be having this conversation if you truly wanted to stop. You just want someone to remind you that it’s worth it.
Athlete: It hurts, Coach. Some days, it really hurts.
Coach: Good. That means you care. And nothing worth having comes without pain. Now breathe. You’ve made it through every hard day so far.
Most quit before the breakthrough!
Don’t be like most!

Why Coaching Is Harder Than People Think (A Holiday Reminder)…
Because coaching isn’t just about plays, drills, or game nights.
It’s about people.
It’s about walking into practice every day and managing emotions you didn’t create but are responsible for.
Your own.
Your players.
Your assistants.
Parents.
Administrators.
Fans.
It’s about teaching kids who are all at different stages.
Different maturity levels.
Different confidence levels.
Different home situations.
And somehow holding them to the same standards while still meeting them where they are.
It’s about decisions that look simple from the stands but feel heavy from the sideline.
Who plays.
When.
Why.
How you communicate it.
And how that decision might land on a 16-year-old who ties their identity to minutes.
It’s about losing sleep over kids who won’t buy in.
Over conversations you need to have.
Over mistakes you replay in your head long after everyone else moved on.
It’s about being judged by people who see the outcome, not the process.
The scoreboard, not the hours.
The result, not the relationships.
And yet, you show up again.
You plan. You teach. You model. You care.
As the season slows and the holidays arrive, this is the reminder:
What you do matters.
Even when it goes unseen.
Even when it feels heavy.
Even when it’s hard.
Coaching is about influence. And influence lasts longer than any season.
That’s why coaching is harder than people think. And also why it matters so much.
As the year winds down, I hope you find a little rest, a little perspective, and a lot of pride in the work you’re doing.
🎄Happy Holidays, Coach.

Players:
Until the day comes when you are perfect, never make an error, never strike out, never walk a batter, never make a mental error and are on point with your preparation, you shouldn’t even be talking about your teammates mistakes, the umpires “bad calls” or how you think your coaches are bad.
Your mental weakness is showing you aren’t ready and to be brutally honest, you’re showing that you’re not as good as you think you are.
I was you. I was the reason for my inconsistent performance. I was holding myself back with excuses and blaming. But the moment I realized what I was doing to myself and my team, it all changed.
Fix your attitude. Fix your mindset. Become accountable and get mentally tougher.
Adults (parents and coaches), stop participating in these conversations, stop instigating them and STOP allowing them.

Great coaches hold you accountable.
If someone loves you, they won’t let you settle for less than your best.
Real care speaks up. It challenges, corrects, and calls you higher even when it’s uncomfortable.
If someone watches you self-destruct in silence, that’s not love that’s neglect.
Don’t confuse comfort with care. The people who challenge you with truth are the ones who truly have your back.
Let coaches coach.
