Since 2016, I’ve educated #Nebraskans about tick-borne Illness & #tick safety. People are finally starting to listen bc they don’t want a red meat allergy. Does alpha-gal occur in the beef state? You bet your 🍔 it does! @UNLBeef @UNLExtension @UNLEntomology
We’ve been interested in #Alphagal for years. It’s an allergy to red meat associated with a #tick bite! In our latest episode, we hear about Alpha-gal from a sufferer & a doctor/researcher. Weird doesn’t even begin to describe it! arthro-pod.blogspot.com/2023… #lonestartick

After years of trying to educate people about ticks in the Beef State to no avail, @UNLBeef finally asked me write an article for BeefWatch. People who enjoy eating or producing red meat listen when they find out a tick bite can change their diet. beef.unl.edu/beefwatch/2023/…

Plant vegetables based on soil temperatures. Soils are too cold for most, if not all, cool season vegetables and no warm season vegetables. Keep track of soil temperatures in Nebraska at: cropwatch.unl.edu/soiltemper… Most cool season vegetables need at least 40 degree F soils.

Looks like the current snowfall will stay around for a bit. This could lead to vole runs under the snow. Damage looks worse than it is to the turf. However, woody plants could be damaged. #NebExt @UNLExtension

The largest wasp in Nebraska, the cicada killer wasp, may seem scary because of its size (1.5-2 inches). But these wasps seldom sting people and disappear when cicadas do in the fall. Cicada killer wasps are often confused for murder hornets, currently found only in Washington.

Pull excessive mulch away from the trunks of trees. It can blow and pile up against the trunk. Excessive mulch can encourage softening and rotting of the bark during the growing season and critter damage in fall/winter. #weekendvibes #GardeningTwitter @UNLExtension

When squash plants like zucchini, summer squash and acorn squash suddenly collapse and the base of the stem is mushy with holes, the likely cause is squash vine borer. buff.ly/3bHGp6b @UNLExtension
