159 years ago today, on June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger and Union Army troops marched to Galveston, Texas to free the last enslaved Black Americans and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that had been issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. The School District of Palm Beach County acknowledges Juneteenth and its significance, as part of the District’s efforts to uphold its mission to educate, affirm, and inspire each student in an equity-embedded school system.

During the testing season, remember to celebrate ALL students and their efforts! Not everybody student can show their true talents on a standardized test. For some, getting to school and eating breakfast is a win in their book!!

You wanting to keep YOUR child from reading a book with a gay main character doesn’t mean you get to decide if MY child can. Your desire to keep YOUR child from learning ACCURATE black history doesn’t mean MY child doesn’t get to. And just because YOU’RE offended by Michelangelo‘s work, doesn’t mean MY child shouldn’t see it. Crying “parents rights” doesn’t mean YOU have the right to parent MY kid. Or ANYONE else’s. So cut the shit.
