As our nation celebrates 250 years, among the freedoms I am most grateful for is the First Amendment and all of the ways it ensures a free society through our history and in this very moment. Protect it. Honor it. Believe in it.

The White House Correspondents' Association strongly objects to the decision to restrict a journalist’s coverage simply because the president didn’t care for their questioning. That is retaliation. The American public's right to an independent press depends on reporters being able to do their jobs without fear that challenging the president will cut off their access.

The 5 network WH TV pool provides raw materials of news coverage: video, audio, editorial information and logistical support to news outlets then seen across the world. That is separate from how individual outlets use the material to prepare their own stories and make their own editorial choices.
If a news outlet shoots and plays out its content online or through a channel, that is called "unilateral" coverage. A "pool" requires an organized system of member
outlets, a secure distribution
system, cost sharing and defined duties.
Yes, WHCA has long provided specific guidance from Secret Service and various administrations
on matters where video material should not be used at all or with limitations for security reasons.
For decades, the @whca has advised poolers not to air video of taillights because it’s a potential risk to the security of the motorcade.
The print and radio pool also distribute their information to other outlets. Stills use their respective wire services to distribute images. WH has invited secondary and new media outlets into pool that do not have any responsibility to provide content beyond their own viewers/readers. Those outlets do not provide a collective product.
The 5 networks expend considerable resources for staff, equipment, travel costs to provide coverage of the president anywhere in the world and have an established infrastructure for how the images, audio and editorial information is distributed for use by other outlets. That is how the public receives this coverage.

First Dogs Beat. President Obama announced the passing of Sunny who had lived in the White House.
She and fellow first dog Bo were both Portuguese Water Dogs. Sunny was 13.
Congratulations to @AlexWitt on her marvelous nearly 30 year run as a calm, intelligent voice for viewers during every kind of breaking news. Alex has been at the heart of the coverage of our times. It was pleasure to work with her during the MSNBC years. This weekend, she signs off @MSNOWNews Thank you Alex.

In the summer of 1946, three US presidents were born within 67 days. Donald Trump on June 14. George W. Bush on July 6. Bill Clinton on August 19. Each man is now 80 but their two terms in the highest office span more than 33 years. Same generation. Different eras of influence.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley schedules meeting for Tuesday on Todd Blanche nomination. Spokesman say he wants to give WH time to secure the votes to confirm Blanche before August recess.
Well done to @Weijia who gracefully articulated the irreplaceable value of the First Amendment to the American people. Journalists whose work has held the administration to account and informed the public were honored in the presence of the very president they cover. That is itself an expression of a free press for the public to see, for students scholars to witness and for government officials in the room to experience up close. Thank you @whca
My favorite line from @weijia’s incredible @whca remarks Friday night, as she addressed President Trump:
“When we ask questions, you push back. You give us answers, and we push back. You have always been a deal guy. Well, that’s the deal. And the First Amendment is a done deal. And that’s what we toast tonight.”

ALT “The appearance of Federal law enforcement agents on the doorstep of news reporters should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects. Our journalists report the facts and advance the American public’s right to know how their government is operating and their taxpayer dollars are being used. This brazen act should be seen as nothing more than an attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is happening in their country by intimidating journalists from doing their jobs.” — David McCraw, Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel
