Very noticeable that the words “climate”and “change” aren’t mentioned once in this piece.
Excl: Labour’s energy policy is “batshit crazy” and the department overseeing net zero is “basically the ministry for P45s”, one of Britain’s most powerful union leaders has said.
In an interview with The Times, Gary Smith accused the government of relying on “sticking-plaster politics” while companies struggled with high energy costs and warned that rising energy bills would create a raft of fresh strikes across the public and private sector.
On Jackdaw and Rosebank he said: “If they do not do this, it will damage hugely the government’s credibility, and it will massively damage investment because that infrastructure, as I understand it, is ready to go — billions of investment. And if it does not now happen, who in their right mind is going to put money into this country?”

This is an edited audio clip which deliberately and fraudulently misquotes me speaking at a meeting with local residents last year.
What I actually said and confirmed by a resident who attended the meeting was “I don’t care who stops the boats, as long as they are stopped”

Sorry but this is bullshit. I’ve heard the full tape vs the edit and the line is completely taken out of context in the edit.
We absolutely should not condone this type of wilful misinterpretation. Jo is one of Labour’s biggest advocates for stopping the scourge of small boat crossings

We encourage state-school educated children from normal backgrounds to aim high and apply to Oxbridge, and then castigate them when they succeed and end up as Cabinet ministers. What message does that send? Answer: if you do well, we’ll portray you as toffs and sell outs, so don’t bother. Drives me mad.
At last!
Big development in the water wars
Today the Environment Agency has commenced criminal proceedings against Southern Water and its former bosses after a major court judgement .
Four former employees from Southern Water, including the former Chief Executive Officer Matthew Wright face a charge of conspiracy to defraud.
“It is alleged that between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2017 the individuals conspired to defraud the Environment Agency and Ofwat by the implementation of artificial no-flow events at waste water treatment works operated by Southern Water to manipulate the Operator Self-Monitoring (OSM) compliance testing regime” says the agency.
Conspiracy to defraud is a common law offence carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment. The case will now proceed before the Medway Magistrates Court.
The Environment Agency has confirmed today that it has commenced criminal proceedings against Southern Water and four of the company's former employees - Matthew Wright, Philip Barker, Clive Massey and Mark Gregory.
Three further individuals will also face charges linked to failure to comply with environmental permits - Mark Butler, Terry Stephens and David James
OSM was introduced for the water industry in 2009 and requires water companies to take samples at their wastewater treatment works and report the results to the Environment Agency. Strict rules govern how samples must be taken to ensure their independence and accuracy. It is an offence if there is evidence that flows or data are deliberately manipulated to avoid compliance checks.

This 'joke' is not offensive because it was never intended to reach the ears of those it could offend. We all say things in private that we would never dream of saying in public. It's called being a normal human being. What is NOT normal is to pretend this is somehow outrageous.

Btw. I'm not aware of any models suggesting a "sudden collapse" of the #AMOC. The very serious real risk is that it soon passes a point of no return (tipping point) where it shutting down over the next 50-100 years becomes practically unstoppable.

They fear Ed Miliband as an opponent and so attack him. People want climate action and can see it’s necessary. Miliband delivered while in office - his successor must do the same. theguardian.com/politics/202…

As hosepipe bans are issued across the country, my reporting today reveals that data centres are estimated to be using 6.6 million litres of drinking water every single day!
Water UK said this is a “genuine failing of government”.

I worked globally to advance science based climate action, a just transition, with jobs for now and the future must be a priority. Cheaper, greener, cleaner energy is possible, and it’s already here.
A good time to reshare this piece I wrote last month 👇🏾
“The facts remain this: the hundreds of North Sea licenses granted by the Conservatives over 14 years have produced the equivalent of just 36 days of gas for the UK. The North Sea reserves have been in terminal decline for years. This is a feature of geology, not a piece of political spin”

If we’re still using oil and gas (which we are) importing it instead of producing it at home doesn’t change the climate impact.
It does change who gets the jobs, who gets the tax revenues to fund our public services and who controls our energy security and national resilience. This is absolutely the right call.

One of the most consequential discoveries of the 20th century is marked by a small blue plaque near my office. The lithium-ion cathode, Oxford, 1980.
Grid batteries have since gone from one 5 MW project to 267 GW worldwide.

Responsible politicians need to act now, despite uncertainties, as they do for other security risks. For we won’t have scientific certainty until it’s too late. #AMOC

Ten days of water. That is what is left in northern Italy. Salt from the Adriatic pushing upstream into soil that fed generations.
Emergency meetings next week. Crops already turning.
We bear witness to a land dying on a timeline measured in days, not decades.

Water companies have been banned from paying bonuses. So Anglian Water has given its chief executive a £1.3m 'retention payment' instead. I would accuse them of taking the piss, but they're dumping most of that into the River Ouse.
Very good @NEF blog from Polly Billington MP on why an Andy Burnham-led Labour Government should be leading the energy transition away from oil, gas and coal at home and internationally neweconomics.org/2026/07/ene…
Thought-provoking piece from @JDKaile on how @andyburnham’s @UKLabour have to reconnect and represent rural and coastal areas as well as cities and large towns.
