This is especially true when those of us who produce internet comedy are told what we make could never work on TV... until SNL or sitcoms blatantly copy it, and then it's clever and edgy. I've literally heard showrunners advice TV writers to "go see what they're doing on online".
This is the most important book I ever read on directing. It taught me the basic core principle (that no film school ever taught me) that the director's primarily job is to make choices and decisions. Not just artistically, but as a basic function of keeping the production going.
#5 is an oldie but goodie, On Directing Film, by David Mamet, the thesis of which is: if you observe certain basic principles, you can tell a story cinematically even if you're not naturally visually gifted (which Mamet admits he's not). mzs.press/On-Directing-Film-…
Maybe not the best of all time, but def one of the best sequel trailers. It manages to really get you excited about the possibilities of the movie, with clever taglines ("Do you remember the future?" "It's about time.") highlighting the fun, adventure comedy aspect of the series.
Can someone please revive The Critic? It was a great show then, and would be great now. @realjonlovitz can slip back into the voice!
