Everyone's arguing about whether Somaliland gets recognised. I think the more interesting question is what kind of world will recognise it?

Very interesting read!
📄 A declassified CIA intelligence bulletin on Somaliland, 1960. Somaliland independence was hijacked.
Even the CIA was reporting on Somaliland's push for immediate independence. Britain had planned a gradual transfer of power over several years, but certain nationalists had other plans.
The CIA described the nationalists as “UAR-supported.” The United Arab Republic, which was receiving Soviet assistance at the time.
Somaliland achieved independence on 26 June 1960, only to enter union with Somalia five days later. That was the self-inflicted wound, assisted by USSR backed United Arab Republic.

Read this unreported historical records on Somaliland independence.
I bet even Somaliland politicians aren't aware of this

📸 This photograph captures the nomination of candidates for elections to the Legislative Council in Somaliland.
Before independence on 26 June 1960, Somaliland was already developing its own representative institutions. Registrations for the electoral rolls were carried out in the main towns. Nominations of candidates were accepted in the open, as in this photograph, with local people gathered around.
Somaliland was already building its own government in the 1950s. That work never stopped.

History rewards those who build their state, preserve their sovereignty, and endure with purpose; Somaliland’s journey reminds the world that political realities cannot be ignored forever, and that recognition begins when the world acknowledges what a people have already built.
Anyone familiar with geopolitics know that Somaliland isn't Somalia. President Trump himself felt the need to distinguish Somaliland from the other one.
Somaliland is an independent country, it's a democracy, pro-western, it's stable and safe. At sea, keeps water safe from pirates, and at land has 0 tolerance for terrorism. It's only a matter of time before formal recognition happens, however, in practice it's already a functioning nation.

Never forget: Ilhan Omar’s family didn’t flee Somalia as the oppressed. They fled because her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a senior colonel in the Somali National Army of the genocidal communist dictator Mohamed Siad Barre, the regime that systematically slaughtered up to 200,000 people, mostly Isaaq civilians, in one of the worst genocides in modern African history.
Her father wasn’t some low-level nobody or a teacher who just happened to be around. He was an esteemed senior officer who commanded a regiment, trained in the Soviet Union, and stayed in the military hierarchy of that brutal Marxist-Leninist dictatorship for years.
When the regime finally collapsed under the weight of its own mass murder, famine, and civil war in 1991, the family ran, not as victims of the dictatorship, but as people tied to the apparatus that had just spent years bombing cities, executing civilians, and turning northern Somalia into a killing field.
Now this same family is in the US, where Omar stands up and lectures Americans about justice, accountability, morality, and “genocide.” The hypocrisy is sickening. A daughter of a colonel from the regime that carried out the Isaaq genocide has the gall to moralize to the country that took her in after her father’s side lost power.
Her father came to the U.S. as a “refugee,” just like Yusuf Abdi Ali, who was accused of war crimes and later found liable for torture in a U.S. civil court. Yet, as far as publicly available information shows, her father never faced comparable scrutiny or accountability. Consider this: Ali was deported from the US only two years ago, after a survivor pursued justice through the courts. It took a survivor’s determination to bring his abuses before a judge and jury.
That’s the record.

President Trump’s clarity and leadership in recognising the distinction between Democratic Republic Somaliland and the failed state of Somalia demonstrate the importance of political realism and acknowledging Somaliland’s distinct identity, functioning institutions, and legitimate aspirations for international recognition.

President Trump’s acknowledgment of Somaliland as separate from Somalia reflects a reality that cannot be altered by statements from Mogadishu: Somaliland is a sovereign, self-governing nation.
No external position will change the democratic will of our people. No statement, however forceful, can change the facts on the ground or diminish the growing international attention to Somaliland’s stability, democratic institutions, and resilience.
While Somalia responds with denial, Somaliland will continue to move forward with confidence and unity.

For those who doubted the achievements of our President’s recent visit to the United States, here is the response.
For the first time in history, a sitting U.S. President has publicly acknowledged Somaliland as a country separate from Somalia. This is a significant moment in Somaliland’s diplomatic journey.
Thank you, President Trump. We remain hopeful that formal U.S. recognition of the Republic of Somaliland is on the horizon.
Somaliland’s journey toward international recognition continues.
Somalia is working overtime to get the US Embassy in Mogadishu to issue a statement contradicting Trump.
Funny how they stayed quiet through all the other things Trump has said about Somalia.
Why would Trump allow a failed state to pressure his own administration into contradicting him and making him look weak?
