True Life Story: Murder in Tripoli In 1996, a young man and his girlfriend traveled by road from Lagos, Nigeria to Tripoli, Libya. They passed through Sokoto, the Niger Republic, and Algeria. When they arrived in Tripoli, they stayed with a friend from the young man’s hometown. This friend was sharing a one-room apartment with his own girlfriend. One day, while the hosts were out, the police came to the house. They took the newly arrived girl away in front of her boyfriend and the landlady. Her boyfriend did not want her to be taken alone, so he jumped into the police vehicle. Both of them were taken to an underground facility where they were tortured and harshly questioned. They still did not know what crime they were accused of. At the facility, they learned that five or six Nigerians (including one woman who was the girlfriend of one of the men) were involved in the murder of their landlord. This is how it happened: In Libya, foreign currencies like the US dollar were banned. The landlord asked one of his tenants to help him change some Libyan dinars into dollars. Instead of helping him, the tenants attacked the landlord. They tied him up, stuffed cotton wool into his nose and ears, and hid him between a mattress. To hide what they had done, they needed an alibi. They went to a house one or two streets away. The woman in the group was friends with the girl who lived in that house, so the neighbors saw them go inside. After that, they disappeared without a trace. Soon, rumors started spreading. People said the killers were hiding in the house where they had been seen entering. The police were called. When the police arrived, only the newly arrived couple were in the house.
