Gathering stuff I've posted here and there into one post. This is focused on the *original concepts or intentions of released Characters* that I know of. This is largely reiterating, but some fleshing out. VITTORIO TOSCANO: > The fog traveling aspect was a "last minute addition" to improve her marketability and give him clothing options that would be sexier or play into his "daddy appeal". This wasn't as last minute as it might seem, but was still not his intended idea. > His original default was more similar to his Lord look seen in his lore art and tome Outfit. RENATO & THALITA LYRA: > Rather than just siblings, the two were actually twins. This was changed to avoid confusion with the other Twins already in the Realm. THE UNKNOWN: > Not much here but it would've worked more like The Legion with a male and female version being default, rather than purchases. SABLE WARD: > Originally named Morrigan Edwards. > Changed for simplicity and uniqueness. Most likely for a less "typical" name. THE HOUNDMASTER > Originally called The Bloodhound > Her original concept always consisted of her and a dog that chased or hunted Survivors. > Her original story was very different though, being a Caucasian woman in the Victorian era. Instead of being a pirate, she partook in dog shows (or fights?) and became rich off of that. She was a solitary and cruel woman who lived alone in her estate, chasing any trespassers off with her dog and using it to do her dirty work. She did NOT live on a plantation OR keep slaves. I'm sorry I have to say or bring this up, but this was a disgusting rumor for a while. > Her original weapon was a Whip. There were unfortunate oversights in pairing this weapon with her storyline, but it was never intended with racial undertones. Despite this, it was another unfortunate oversight that the paired Survivor was a black woman (see below for more). > An internal controversy started when some employees raised concerns and upset about the oversight. A sensitivity consultant (that BHVR works with on and off) was contacted and she suggested not only removing the weapon but also changing her race while offering some racial dynamics to avoid (i.e. Arab/Israel, Japanese/Korean). Eventually, Portia was concepted as a black woman and her story shifted towards a pirate one. This was NOT a last minute thing, this change was made very early in the Chapter's conception so it is not reason for her "not feeling pirate enough". ORELA ROSE > Originally the Survivor counterpart to The Houndmaster. > She was NOT removed due to the aforementioned controversy. She was instead purposefully put on her own later on at the suggestion of (several) trans consultants BHVR had worked with for her. They felt it would be better to spotlight only her rather than pair her with a Killer, at least for the first of its kind. > Her original story was also different though. Rather than a horror-loving, podcast-listening paramedic with a restaurant open once a month, she was instead a dedicated paramedic who was very involved in the ballroom scene and culture around downtown Chicago. For those unaware, ball culture is an LGBTQ and largely trans and black subculture. It's where things like Voguing (think Madonna) and much of current day slang/lingo originates from. She was very apart of this scene and she and her Outfits would've taken special interest in the fashion of it. > Her original reference was LARGELY based on the show Pose, which is about this subculture. This is also why she's voiced by Angelica Ross, who plays Candy in the show. > Orela was being crafted largely by queer employees at BHVR. In the end, a non-queer director had the final say on her look and story and ended up changing it all because he found it "too stereotypical". TAURIE CAIN > Originally meant to be a solo Survivor for April 2025, but was switched with Orela Rose after the aforementioned suggestion. > She was not designed to have a name, only being known as The Cultist to showcase her life of servitude and dedication to the Entity. > Her lore was pretty different: Her early beginnings were that she lost her family [somehow] and was left homeless in the streets of Edinburgh (changed to Glasgow for release). The reason she joined the cult was to both have a community but also a place for warmth and food. The cult saved her. She was a hardened and rebellious punk who had to do what she could to survive alone on the cold streets, this is why her default is kind of... homeless chic lmao. > In her final story, she hesitated on killing Jordan. In her original lore, she HAD killed before in the name of the cult. She would've been the first original Survivor to have killed an innocent soul by her hand *intentionally*. I don't know how or why she would've been taken as a Survivor by the Entity in her original lore. > As a solo Survivor, she was intended to be MUCH more fleshed out and standout worthy a good reason for being solo. Whether that means in story, Perks, or look. THE KRASUE > Originally called The Manananggal. > Focused on the folklore of the Manananggal creature, which is effectively the Filipino version of a Krasue. She was always an opera singer. > Power had more of a curse aspect, rather than infection one. VEE BOONYASAK > Originally named Dalisay Joy (DJ) Mabini. Then, DJ Anurak after Thai change. > Sinister Grace originally focused on the Philippines rather than Thailand. I'm not sure why it was changed! > Vee wasn't meant to be the only Survivor. Either Tik or Krit, her bandmates in her released lore, were intended to be a duo Survivor for the first two Survivor Chapter since Tools of Torment. This was abandoned after TWD was locked in, as there would've been too many Survivors for the year. Though, they were still intended to be Legendary/Ultra Rare cosmetics, which is why Vee had voicelines being surprised to see them, but they were never added. SHANE WIIGWAAS > Originally named Kade Contois. > Internal codename was The Beacon. > His story and lore was not originally about his law experience or cousin. Instead, he was a regular and active member of his community and had a teenage daughter. His whole world changed after she suddenly went missing. He started riding across North America on his bike for any leads on what might’ve happened to her which lead him to get tangled up in a long string of disappearances related to a mysterious black fog. he led the investigation into several missing people, including his daughter. > In the end, BHVR scrubbed his daughter from the story. It may be due to sensitivities surrounding an ongoing crisis (and alarming rates) of murdered and missing Indigenous women across North America, as her story might’ve been too reminiscent of it. There may be some other things I've posted that I'm forgetting. If I ever remember, I'll go back here and update it with a comment below. :)
