Overwhelming preference…
The UK is adrift, unable to define a position in the world. We can adopt one of three strategic positions that are a natural fit … 1. The HQ of the EU. This is what we were prior to Brexit. The rest of the world saw the UK as a perfect place to base their European head office. To adopt this position again, we would have to re-enter the EU in some form. 2. The USA back office and incubator. This would mean interfacing very closely with the USA and providing services and developing talent and innovation that can scale across the USA. The catch would be that the UK would have to be in lockstep with the US on all issues - including factory produced food and insane healthcare systems (the two big issues most Brits hate). 3. The Entrepreneur Island This would position the UK as the best place to start and scale a new company or investment vehicle. There would be a massive focus on digital/creator economy(growing 23% you). The model would have to be low crime, low tax, low regulations. We would have to tolerate a bit of wild-west shenanigans. We’d be competing with Dubai, Ireland and Singapore for this role - we could easily win this. Basically we pick up the template from Jersey/Isle of Man/Gibraltar and bring it to the main island. This would cause a massive influx of wealth as people return from lower tax jurisdictions and even US companies explore basing their global HQ here. Until we pick a “business model” and “brand position” we will continue to drift into obscurity. Which model do you think is best?

Agree, favourite film of 2024, seamless mix of genres, great acting…oh, and a dog 🥰 Would love a Nice Guys sequel soon though - underrated film and hilarious promo.
Have you seen The Fall Guy? It’s a lot of fun. Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are great together, lithely pivoting from drama to romance to comedy and back. Worth the watch.

Christopher Nolan doesn’t write detailed outlines. Instead, he “draws shapes and diagrams and other structural things” to keep the story on track. Like this, the plot map Nolan used for Inception. Let me explain... In storytelling, the idea of structure is everywhere: • 3 Act • StoryGrid • Hero’s Journey But Nolan claims those restrict his creativity. He prefers to think in ‘shapes’ rather than in hard rules. It reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut, who taught about the “shapes of stories” at Harvard. Kurt broke down all stories into 8 unique shapes. The engineer in me loves this view of stories. Instead of vague, hard-to-explain ideas, narrative arcs become data points you can plot. Nolan’s plot map resembles Vonnegut’s “Man In Hole” story shape. The main character gets into trouble then gets out of it again and ends up better off for the experience. But Nolan’s a genius — so he layers on even more. *** As Cobb moves closer to Limbo, he travels “down” the plot map, closer and closer to disaster. Then he fights his way back “up” to reality. Nolan’s plot map isn’t just the shape of his story, It’s also how he designed the world — dreams within dreams. *** Inception is one of the most complex mainstream movies ever, runs 2.5 hours, and made ~$835M at the box office. Yet Christopher Nolan fits the entire arc on a one page map. That’s brilliant. So, next time you tell a story, give the "shape" idea a try. It may come more naturally than you expect.

Remind me again why Hugh Grant isn’t Prime Minister in real life. At least he’s got the will of the people behind his wishes #BennyHilltheme #tories

Hugh Grant tweeted a request at activists protesting outside Westminster to play the Benny Hill theme on their loudspeakers; when they did it became the soundtrack for street interviews with leading Tories trying explain the situation to the British people

People will have their own views on Michael Gove but I think it’s fair to give you an idea of what he’d been doing behind the scenes for Housing over the last few months to demonstrate how serious this decision really is by BJ🧵

The UK Bill of Rights gives the state the power to determine what is meant by the ‘greater good’ and as such our rights become conditional on conforming with this ‘good behaviour’ which can be taken away if the state deems you to be troublesome. This is a dystopia in the making.

Dumb product alert goes to @rimmellondonuk for producing their newest version of Scandal Eyes Kohl Liner - no longer with retractable/extendable tip or ability to sharpen like a regular pencil. Done after 5 uses! Why??!

Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans has survived wars, plagues and financial crisis after being established in 793AD... but it was left devastated by Covid, and now it's gone into administration after 13 centuries. @emma_brazell reports ✍️ trib.al/oWYoTPw 🧵👇
