PROFESSOR AYODEJI OLAWUNMI BADEJO: AN ACADEMIC ENIGMA, A FAMILIAR FACE AND A NEW CHAPTER IN LASU’S STORY
On Monday, 21st September, 2026, Lagos State University experienced the resumption of duty of an academic enigma.
Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi BADEJO, FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, returned to the University community in a new capacity, this time as the 10th Substantive Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University.
But for LASU, Professor BADEJO is hardly a new face.
She is a scholar who has spent decades within the University's academic and administrative ecosystem. She is a teacher, researcher, counsellor, mentor and administrator whose journey through LASU has taken her from the classroom to several positions of institutional responsibility.
Her appointment, therefore, represents more than the assumption of another office. It is also the unfolding of a new phase in a relationship with a University to which she has already contributed substantially.
Over the years, Professor BADEJO has served LASU in several capacities, including as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Chairman of the Senate Curriculum Committee, among other strategic assignments. In these roles, she was involved in matters that touched directly on academic development, programme quality, curriculum review, accreditation, research governance and institutional administration.
As Dean of the Faculty of Education, she oversaw a period in which several academic staff progressed to the professorial cadre, while programmes presented by the Faculty secured full accreditation.
As Chairman of the Senate Curriculum Committee, she contributed to the development and validation of academic programmes and the University's continuing engagement with the requirements of the National Universities Commission.
Her record of mentorship is equally significant. Between 2012 and 2026, she supervised 23 PhD graduates, with one of her doctoral scholars receiving the 2024 Best PhD Thesis Award.* It is little wonder that she has been described as a “Mentor of Mentors.”
And beyond the familiar corridors of LASU, her academic and professional contributions have continued to attract recognition. Her body of scholarship includes books, book chapters and more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, while her professional affiliations and recognitions extend across Nigeria and beyond.
Yet, perhaps, one of the most interesting things about Professor BADEJO's emergence as Vice-Chancellor is the familiarity that surrounds it.
For many members of the University community, this is someone whose career they have watched evolve. For colleagues, former students and mentees, it is the arrival of a familiar academic in a new seat of responsibility.
And that familiarity comes with expectations.
There is the expectation that her experience will speak. That her understanding of LASU will count. That the institutional knowledge gathered over decades will find expression in the decisions she makes and the direction she gives.
There is also the expectation that the things LASU has built over the years will not merely be preserved, but strengthened. That the University's academic culture will continue to grow. That research and innovation will receive renewed attention. That staff and students will find room to thrive. That the University's reputation will continue to travel beyond its immediate environment. And that LASU's longstanding tradition of excellence will continue to find new expressions.
For a University that has continued to evolve, consolidate and expand its place within Nigeria's higher education landscape, the arrival of Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi BADEJO opens another chapter.
It is a chapter that begins with experience, carries the weight of institutional memory and looks towards the possibilities ahead
As Professor BADEJO settles into the responsibilities of her office, the Lagos State University community is delighted to have one of its own take the helm

She encouraged members of staff to contribute actively to the institution’s growth and to align their respective activities with the administration’s development priorities.
Professor BADEJO also presented the eight strategic pillars that would guide her administration, namely:
• Academic excellence and quality assurance;
• Research, innovation and global visibility;
• Financial sustainability and resource mobilisation;
• Infrastructure and digital transformation;
• Staff welfare and industrial harmony;

The familiarisation visits further afforded the Vice-Chancellor the opportunity to interact with the leadership and staff of the respective faculties and schools, and to gain first-hand insight into their challenges and developmental needs.
The engagements underscored the importance of sustained dialogue between the University’s central administration and its constituent units in promoting academic excellence, research, innovation and efficient service delivery.
The visits form part of Professor BADEJO’s efforts to deepen stakeholder engagement, foster an inclusive, open door policy, and establish a shared sense of purpose in advancing the continued growth and development of Lagos State University.

LASU HOSTS 20TH EDITION OF WALK FOR NATURE TO PROMOTE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
The Lagos State University (LASU) community took to the streets on Saturday, 17th October 2026, for the 20th edition of the Walk for Nature, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) in collaboration with the University's Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED).
Dressed in green, red and white shirts, participants set out from the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre on the Main Campus, Ojo, walked through the Iba Gate to First Gate and returned to campus at about 9:00 a.m., with moments of dancing and camaraderie along the way. The 10,000-step walk marked the initiative's 20th anniversary and participants later reconvened at the lecture theatre for the second leg of the programme.
Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide SANWO-OLU, represented by Dr Omobolaji GAJI, Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, noted that Lagos generates about 30,000 tonnes of waste daily, roughly half of which is plastic. He outlined government measures to curb plastic pollution, protect wetlands and improve drainage, describing environmental protection as essential to reducing flooding and safeguarding communities.
In his welcome address, the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo WAHAB, represented by Mrs Tolulope ADEYO Director of the Ecology and Conservation Department, said climate action in a coastal state like Lagos must include infrastructural measures. He explained that wetlands regulate water, support biodiversity, store carbon and sustain livelihoods, and outlined the state's work on wetland protection, waste management and flood risk. Climate resilience, he added, depends not only on government but on informed communities, responsible businesses, active institutions and engaged citizens. He thanked the NCF, LASU and other partners for their commitment to conservation.
The Chairman of the NCF National Executive Council, Hon. Justice (Mrs.) R.I.B. ADEBIYI, pointed to the growing threats of flooding, rising sea levels, extreme heat and wetland loss in Lagos. “When we protect nature, we protect people,” she said, urging students of every discipline to embrace environmental responsibility through tree planting, reduced energy use and responsible waste management. She also called for stronger environmental policies and accountability across government and the private sector.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi BADEJO, FCASSON, FAPROCON, MNAE, represented by the Senior Deputy Bursar, Mr Jerry JINADU, FCA, described the walk as more than an exercise, noting that it promotes physical fitness, social interaction and shared responsibility for nature. She said the university's green environment had been well sustained, linked good health to productivity and academic excellence, and encouraged the organisers to attract younger participants and deepen their partnership with the university.
Yeye Moremi of Oodua, Chief Mrs Olufunsho AMOSUN, founder of UPLIFT Development Foundation and the former First Lady of Ogun State, called participants environmental ambassadors and urged them to conserve water and electricity and take the message of climate action to their families and communities. “We did not just come here to wear the T-shirt and go for a walk. We need you,” she said.
A key highlight of the event was the NCF's donation of a giant recycling bin to the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED), LASU.
Goodwill messages came from corporate partners and sponsors including Aluko & Oyebode, Zenith Bank, DCSL Corporate Services Limited, Fidelity Bank, A.G. Leventis Limited and Seven-Up Bottling Company, while Dame Marie FATAYI-WILLIAMS delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to all who made the 20th edition a success.
