Robodebt was a harmful government scheme. It cost lives and harmed hundreds of thousands of Australians through its unlawful use of automated decision-making (ADM).
It’s hard to believe, but the Albanese Government hasn’t learnt the lessons of Robodebt.
For over a year the government has used unfair ADM in aged care assessments, generating huge community concern, a scathing review from the Commonwealth Ombudsman, and sustained pressure from the crossbench. Now the government is proposing use of another largely untested ADM tool, the I-CAN automated assessment, to inform calculations of NDIS support.
I recently seconded Kate Chaney’s Bill to establish a new framework for the use of ADM in government. We must ensure that chasing cost-efficiency doesn’t compromise responsibility and care.

Update on MsPicocolo. The stitches are out (yeah - celebrations 🥳) and there’s no signs of infection. The foot wound will be left unbandaged so we’ll need to maintain the E-collar for the next few days (till the foot would heals a bit more). ❤️🩹

Responding to calls from Clemency California, Amnesty International, and more than 40 international organizations, Governor Newsom has announced a decisive and powerful step away from the use of the death penalty – the ultimate cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment.
The death penalty should be abolished, everywhere. Today marks a significant moment for human rights in California and across the country, but it is not the finishing line. The world is watching, and this decision is showing that progress is possible, and the United States, which remains among a small group of 17 countries that continues to carry out executions, can move beyond the death penalty.

There is much to celebrate this week, but I want to call specific attention to historic gains Democratic women made in representation:
- For the first time in history, over 100 Democratic women will serve in the U.S. House.
- At least 16 Democratic women will serve in the Senate.
- At least 14 Democratic women will serve as governors, a record high.
- A record of 2,600 Democratic women running for seats in state legislatures helped flip 12 majorities and break 11 supermajorities.
- Four states elected their first woman governor: Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio, and Tennessee.
- @KeishaBottoms will be the first Black woman to serve as a governor.
- @DebHaalandNM will be the first Native American woman to serve as a governor.
- @GinaHinojosaTX will be the first Latina to serve as governor of Texas.
- @peggyflanagan will be the first Native American woman to serve in the Senate.
I am beyond excited to see these extraordinary people and public servants tackle accountability, affordability, and our other challenges to make life better for everyone in this country.

Overnight, Moderna announced that their investigational Bundibugyo ebolavirus vaccine candidate, mRNA-1469, has been recommended by a WHO technical advisory group for inclusion in a Phase 2/3 clinical study in the DRC) subject to regulatory approval. This progress is supported by Phase 1 data showing that our vaccine candidate was generally well tolerated and generated robust Bundibugyo ebolavirus-specific binding antibody responses after a single dose.
