Few characters on TV have embodied the ethos of a good leader like Captain Picard, thanks in large part to the gravitas that Patrick Stewart brought to the role. A true legend that will be sorely missed. RIP.

The comparison between Ukraine’s secession from the USSR and the alleged right of Donbas (or Crimea, for that matter) to secede from Ukraine overlooks critical legal facts. 1) Republics vs. Regions: The Soviet Constitution explicitly gave its 15 constituent republics (including Ukraine) a legal right to secede. Ukraine used this constitutional pathway, backed by a 1991 referendum where Donbas residents also voted for independence. Conversely, Ukraine’s constitution forbids regional secession, and international law protects a sovereign state's territorial integrity. 2) No Basis for Remedial Secession: International law only allows a region to split off if it faces extreme persecution and a total denial of political rights. Prior to 2014, Donbas was fully integrated into Ukrainian politics, regularly electing national leaders. Because internal political avenues existed, a unilateral separation by force has no basis in international law.
Donbas has a right to secede from Ukraine if Ukraine had a right to secede from the USSR. You cannot uphold the right of self-determination in one case but not in the other.

When Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in the 20s he clearly outlined his plans for war, conquest and extermination of the Jews. Most politicians in the 30s did not believe he would go through with them and dismissed his plans as populist ramblings. Putin has been talking about restoring the russian empire since the early 2000s and we still live in the age where naive politicians in the west believe they can make peace with him and russia. He will not stop until he is stopped. Wake the fuck up.

Idk why people are losing their shit at Ukraine and Bosnias votes. Cuba voted no on recognizing the Bosnian genocide 2 years ago, and recognized the russian occupied Ukranian regions as part of Russia right at the start of the war. Solidarity goes both ways
NOW: World majority demands an end to the U.S. blockade on Cuba for the 34th time, in annual UN vote. Vote board:

The reporting on this meeting between Budanov and Witkoff is stunning. Essentially, what Witkoff was proposing here, is that Russia should be allowed to transit energy resources *through* Ukraine, into Europe, and in return for doing so, Ukraine (and presumably the US) would receive a monetary kickback. That is so completely asinine that I dont even know where to start.... For one thing, forcing Ukraine to become subservient to Russia is a nonstarter. But how on earth would it be a good idea to ensure Europe becomes MORE dependent on Russian energy? The whole goal should be to find ways to get Europe to use LESS Russian energy. Trump and Witkoff only see money and transactions. The Ukrainian people don't see it that way. It would be like if the French, instead of helping the American colonists in the Revolutionary war, said, "okay well, what if you guys just let the British control you, and by the way, we'll send some money your way as a thank you for keeping the peace." Asinine. A total and complete lack of understanding from the Trump admin about why this war is happening, and why the Ukrainians are resisting Russian aggression.
Kinda fascinated by the social dynamic of this meeting. Budanov, a supremely intelligent, capable, and brave man, and Witkoff who ... well let us not get bogged down with the exact terminology for a man trying to sell Ukraine creating dependencies on Russia.

According to Le Monde, citing sources, U.S. special envoy Witkoff held a tense meeting in Florida on October 9 with Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office. Sources claimed that Witkoff spoke to Budanov “like a child,” trying to “teach” him how to make money. Witkoff proposed a postwar “regional prosperity plan” that included fully restoring Russian oil and gas transit to Europe through Ukrainian territory. Witkoff argued that Ukraine would earn transit revenues while Europe would benefit from lower energy costs. Budanov reportedly replied that Ukraine’s model is “not Belarus, but Poland,” then stepped out to call President Zelenskyy, who advised him not to show any reaction. When the talks resumed, the Ukrainian side was shown a document outlining a U.S.-Russia diesel deal. An irritated Witkoff reportedly said: “Accept this diesel deal and stop striking Russian oil refineries — you are putting the world at risk!” Ukrainian participants were described as shocked, viewing the plan as creating dependency on Moscow and noting that the United States appeared to have secured nothing in return from Putin. A source close to the delegation told Le Monde: “I have never seen the Ukrainians so stunned and alarmed after a meeting.” Analysts contrasted the episode with the February 28, 2025 Oval Office incident, saying this one involves concrete policy decisions that could affect Ukraine’s ability to defend itself ahead of a potentially harsh winter. lemonde.fr/international/art…

I know a lot of people are pretty defensive of the Baltic countries because of how they’re regarded by ‘tankies’ or whatever, but I gotta say, they really are pretty awful sometimes.

if they do not kill our writers, they burn our books. how else do you think russians made their culture “great”?
300 000 books destroyed in yet another russian strike. I can barely imagine this number. I hear the explosions, I know who suffered and I know it is true. And I wish it never happened to us.

The Oleshky ceasefire is another trap imposed on Ukraine by its russian-American “friends.” Here’s what raises serious questions: 1. An information blackout. Only Newsmax, a pro-Trump, MAGA-aligned media network, is reportedly allowed on the ground. Ukrainian and independent international journalists have been denied access. Why? 2. Who is overseeing the evacuation on the US side? Mark Beckman, Melania Trump’s private adviser and producer of her film Melania. His professional background is in marketing and entertainment. Why him? 3. russia is using the pause to strengthen its positions. Ukrainian military sources report that building materials, ammunition and military supplies are being delivered to russian forward positions on the left bank of the Kherson region. There are reports that russia is preparing assault operations for November. 4. And where are the people being taken? Oleshky residents are reportedly being evacuated to russia, not to Ukrainian-controlled territory. This is being presented as a humanitarian operation. But when journalists are denied access, russia gets an opportunity to strengthen its positions, and Ukrainian civilians are taken to the occupying country, one question demands an answer: Whose interests does this “ceasefire” actually serve? Ukraine must not be forced to sacrifice its citizens’ safety for someone else’s political show. Humanitarian aid must never become a cover for entrenching an occupation. But here we are.

Never forget: russia has spent centuries trying to erase Ukrainian identity. In late October 1937, during Stalin’s Great Terror, Soviet authorities began mass executions at Sandarmokh. Between October 27 and November 4, 1,111 prisoners were executed there, including 287 Ukrainians and people connected to Ukraine. Les Kurbas. Mykola Kulish. Valerian Pidmohylny. Among the victims were leading figures of the Ukrainian cultural renaissance of the 1920s — the Executed Renaissance. 89 years later, russia is still trying to erase Ukrainian identity. They tried to erase us then. They will not erase us now.
