Israel’s Ambassador to Somaliland, Michael Lotem, presented his credentials to President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi last week in a historic ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Hargeisa.
The ceremony marks another important step in strengthening relations between Israel and Somaliland, following their mutual recognition on December 26, 2025.
Since then, ties between the two countries have continued to develop. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar made a historic visit to Somaliland in January 2026, while Somaliland opened its embassy in Jerusalem during President Abdullahi’s visit to Israel in June 2026.
Following the presentation of credentials, a cornerstone-laying ceremony was held for Israel’s new embassy in Hargeisa.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said:
“Israel is determined to develop and strengthen its relations with Somaliland.
“The appointment of ambassadors, in accordance with the agreement reached when our countries established mutual recognition, is another important step in deepening the ties between us.”

Speaking at the Mojaloop Community Meeting in Accra, Ghana, H. E. Hamse A. Khaire, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Somaliland, outlined the nation’s vision for digital financial transformation.
The address detailed the deployment of the Somaliland Instant Inclusive Payment System (SL-IIPS), designed to unify fragmented payment networks across the economy.
By establishing central bank oversight and sovereign interoperability, SL-IIPS protects public interest while enhancing trust and affordability in financial services.

President of Somalia's shamful!!! remarks before the Parliament of Uganda —that his presidency depends on the continued presence of UPDF forces in Somalia—amount to a damning admission of the failure and incompetence of their security and governance institutions. A government unable to secure its own territory should reflect seriously before claiming authority over a country it has not governed for more than 35 years.
Republic of Somaliland was independent on 26 June 1960. Since restoring its independence in 1991, we have rebuilt our institutions, maintained peace and established our own political system through the resilience and determination of our people.
With Israel’s recognition and our longstanding partnership with Taiwan, we call upon the United States, the United Kingdom, African nations and the wider international community to follow suit.
Somaliland is not Somalia’s possession. Our history, self-governance and the will of our people demand serious international recognition. The time to act is now.
