On 11 March 2011 a magnitude 9.0 to 9.1 earthquake struck off Tohoku. In deep water a tsunami may be only about a metre high, passing under ships unnoticed at over 800 km/h.
Near shore it slows and its height grows enormously, possibly reaching up to 40.5 m at Miyako. I can't picture the nerve it took to steer straight into that.
