I’m not defending the shambolic performance & the genuine lack of ambition at times of 🇫🇷 clubs.
But they face a starker financial reality & scrutiny which means that they have to balance the books, to the detriment of their competitiveness but perhaps good for club survival.
I’m not a financial football specialist (@Jon_LeGossip is MUCH better placed than me). But 🏴clubs are also massively in debt. What if the bubble bursts?
Shocking scores also just…happen. Brazil lost 7-1 in a World Cup SF, Man Utd 6-1 to City & Roma 7-1 to Utd. It’s sport.
Nothing excuses that result.
Lens have been acutely conscious of 💰difficulties in 🇫🇷 football. They also face actual financial scrutiny with the DNCG every year, something other leagues disregard. That also means 🇫🇷 clubs actually live within their means.
According to reporting by L’Equipe, Fonseca was earning c.€400k per month and Sporting Lisbon will pay #OL €5m as compensation. Not insignificant for a club in financial difficulties and, as ever, this exposes the harsh reality of the impact of the Textor years.
Paulo Fonseca leaves #OL. Disappointment for Lyon considering the 🇵🇹 manager had stabilised them in turbulent times & was a recognisable name to help bring in players. Financial relief for an embattled club but, more importantly, huge loss in the dressing room of course.

What’s interesting too:
1. #HAC had banked on stability over the last few seasons. Despite relative inexperience, they’d stick by Digard & DoF Bodmer last 2 seasons (before Bodmer’s departure this summer).
2. Ba wanted confirmation that Digard would stay before stepping in.
Chaos at #HAC. After Didier Digard’s sacking and Pdt Roussier’s resignation Saturday, DoF Demba Ba resigned today. Who is at the helm of the club bottom of #Ligue1 with 2pts in 9 games (& already 6pts behind 16th…)?

Bruno Pep Genesio is doing outstanding work and seems to have settled on a balanced starting XI with Abdelli pulling the strings, Gouiri as the attacking fulcrum and plenty of endeavour in Hojbjerg & Nnadi in midfield. Dare we say OM seem sensible?
Lyon climb to 3rd behind the rejuvenated Ernest Nuamah and the ever-important Corentin Tolisso. But the evening was overshadowed by the imminent departure of manager Paulo Fonseca back to 🇵🇹. A major loss for #OL and Ligue 1.

🚨LIGUE 1 QUARTER SEASON REVIEW🚨

The league of talents remain. #LOSC’s Academy seemingly keeps on delivering, with Soriba Diaoune looking excellent and fearless in 🇪🇺 before being lively against Lens, perhaps offering a solution to Lille’s problematic LW spot so far. And don’t forget 18yo Mariba Goffi at RB too.
Great insight into #LOSC, a club that’s been doing nearly everything right on and off the pitch since Olivier Letang took over in 2020. Their Academy is thriving again after lean years, they’re investing in their stadium & have a young manager in Davide Ancelotti.
I went behind the scenes at Lille to explore the academy that has produced talents like Bouaddi - and a new era under Davide Ancelotti
Includes interviews with Ancelotti, president Letang & Nabil Bentaleb on his return after suffering a cardiac arrest

The fact we never get tired of seeing these clips (even though we’ve seen them countless times and know them by heart) is why we decided to do our Z Files series on ZZ’s most iconic 🇫🇷 games.
🚨THE Z FILES: EPISODE 2🚨
We continue our watch of iconic Zidane games for 🇫🇷. Up next: a wonderful Euro 2000 semi-final against Figo’s 🇵🇹. Abel Xavier. And, perhaps, the greatest touch of all time.
