The DMV Daily’s Moe Giving Charity Drive is critical to providing family assistance to 2,500 families across Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, this initiative focuses on supporting households in need. Items we’re looking to acquire during the drive: ● Toys — Ages 0–5: learning toys, blocks, dolls, toy cars/trucks, puzzles, Play-Doh, stuffed animals, musical toys and toddler books. ● Kids — Ages 6–10: LEGO/building sets, action figures, dolls, board games, arts & crafts kits, science kits, sports equipment, books and remote-control toys. ● Teens — Ages 11–17: headphones/Bluetooth speakers, sports gear, beauty/grooming sets, backpacks, hoodies, books, art supplies, gaming accessories and especially 25–50 gift cards. Gift cards are commonly emphasized by holiday programs because teens can be harder to shop for. ● Winter essentials: new coats, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, pajamas and blankets. A Maryland holiday program, for example, includes outfits, socks, hats, gloves and toys in its child wish lists. ● Baby essentials: diapers, Pull-Ups, wipes, baby wash, lotion, bottles and infant toys. These are also current needs listed by Maryland organizations such as St. Ann’s Center and House of Ruth Maryland. ● Family essentials: full-size shampoo/conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste/toothbrushes, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent and paper products. Full-size hygiene products are particularly useful for families. ● Food assistance: grocery gift cards and/or holiday food boxes containing shelf-stable foods. ● Coats & Jackets for Infants, Toddlers, Young Kids & Teens ranging from the age of 1M to 17. A Mississippi grand jury has unanimously declined to indict anyone in connection with the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, who was found dead after a Fourth of July trip with friends to Horn Island. After reviewing witness testimony, physical and digital evidence, GPS and cellphone data, the grand jury found no credible evidence of criminal conduct or that Wells’ death was racially motivated. The report said the circumstances surrounding the discovery of his body were consistent with drowning, although state and independent forensic examinations left his cause and manner of death undetermined. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents Wells’ family, said the decision leaves unanswered questions and called for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.

The retailer confirmed on social media that churros will soon return to Costco food courts across the U.S. While an exact nationwide launch date hasn’t been announced, Costco says customers should keep an eye out at their local warehouse in the coming weeks, as availability may vary by location. Metro is celebrating its 50th anniversary with five commemorative SmarTrip card designs highlighting different decades of the transit system’s history. Beginning Thursday, Sept. 24, a new design will be released every two weeks, with about 20,000 cards of each design available at select Metro stations. Customers can check availability at Metro50.com. The cards will feature historic images and milestones from the 1970s through the 2010s and beyond. Multiple designs may be available at some stations, with signs posted on fare vending machines identifying which card is being offered. The release schedule is: Sept. 24 — 1970s: Metro pylons and the system’s iconic waffle-vaulted station ceilings. Oct. 8 — 1980s: Construction crews working on the Potomac River crossing. Oct. 22 — 1990s: A tunnel boring machine used during construction of some of Metro’s deepest stations. Nov. 5 — 2000s: The Metro Rail map and a bus marking the completion of the originally planned 103-mile, 83-station system in 2001. Nov. 19 — 2010s and beyond: The 7000-series trains, which debuted in 2015. Metro also plans to offer a special Metro-branded SmarTrip card and trading-card collecting book at its holiday pop-up shop for customers looking to collect all five designs.

Body and dash-camera video has been released nearly a month after a multi-county police chase ended in a deadly crash that killed 33-year-old Alexis Cummings. The Aug. 25 incident began as a traffic stop in Charles County after deputies stopped a silver Toyota Camry near Leonardtown Road and Lakewood Drive in Waldorf. The stop was requested by Arlington police because one of the occupants had more than 20 active warrants across Maryland and Virginia. Video shows deputies asking the three women inside the vehicle to exit. Investigators said the front-seat passenger, who had the active warrants, moved into the driver’s seat, shoved a deputy and sped away with Cummings still in the back seat. Deputies pursued the Toyota but lost sight of it near Crain Highway and Substation Road. After seeing the vehicle traveling the wrong way on Crain Highway, a supervisor terminated the pursuit. Shortly afterward, the Toyota crashed into two vans on southbound Crain Highway near McKendree Road in Prince George’s County. The van drivers were not seriously injured. Cummings was taken to a hospital, where she later died. The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating the incident.
