North Carolina university students walked out of classes Thursday, demanding justice for Nolan Wells.
Calls for an independent federal investigation into the 18-year-old Black college student’s death in July have spread from Mississippi to Atlanta, New York, and now HBCUs and other schools across the South, after a Jackson County grand jury declared that it found "no evidence" of a crime and declined to bring charges in September.
Wells’s body was found near Horn Island after a holiday boat trip with white friends. His family says they have received too few answers regarding the circumstances of his death.

The Ghetto Informant Program:
The Ghetto Informant Program (GIP), *was* a vast surveillance initiative designed to penetrate Black communities during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Church Committee Staff Report noted, “Perhaps one of the largest programs was the so-called ghetto informant program.” The numbers alone underscore the scale of state intrusion: “In August 1968, we had 3,248 racial ghetto-type informants… By October we were at 6,000. It reached its peak in 1972 with 7,500 ghetto informants.”

Hundreds marched in the streets near New York City’s Union Square on Wednesday night to demand a federal investigation into the death of Nolan Wells, the 18-year-old Black teen from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, whose body was found off Horn Island after a Fourth of July boat trip with a group of mostly white friends who returned without him.
Wells’s family and allies are pushing for answers after a Jackson County grand jury declined to bring charges last month. This week, they released findings from a nearly 300-page forensic report that includes Nolan’s friends’ private Snapchat conversations, intensifying calls for transparency and accountability in his death.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), one of the world’s most prestigious universities, has removed Haitian linguistics professor Michel DeGraff from his teaching duties after rejecting his proposed course about language, colonialism, and liberation, including discussions about Haiti and Palestine.
DeGraff had worked in MIT’s linguistics department for more than 28 years before being moved to a general faculty position.
The professor believes MIT’s decision was connected to his criticism of Israel and his plans to teach students about Palestine, colonialism, and freedom. He argues that the school is limiting his academic freedom and preventing him from teaching these subjects.
MIT’s reasons for rejecting the course included concerns about its place in the curriculum and other academic issues. However, DeGraff disputes the way the school handled the situation.
In March 2026, DeGraff filed a federal lawsuit against MIT, claiming that the school violated his rights. The case raises questions about academic freedom and whether professors can be punished for the subjects they want to teach.
The court has not yet determined whether MIT unlawfully punished DeGraff because of his opinions.
