To try to assist all those around me, I wanted to make a few posts throughout November that might help those who are independently doing their shopping this year. Here is the 1st post to keep our community informed: YOUR HEALTH COVERAGE OPTIONS THIS YEAR IF YOU DON'T HAVE EMPLOYER COVERAGE: Insurance through the health insurance marketplace. This is the most straightforward path to getting insured. Short-Term Medical Plans: These are typically lower-cost PPO plans that last up to 4 months in a year, and then you are dropped (you would have to look for a different carrier at the end of the term). THEY DO NOT COVER PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS! HealthCare sharing Ministries: Alternatives to traditional insurance and can be year-long like traditional insurance. Cost less than full-cost insurance if you don't qualify for any savings on the marketplace. THEY DO NOT COVER PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS, AND THEY'RE NOT INSURANCE! (Much higher risk to you because of this) Some people may also be qualified for free coverage in the state depending on their income. If you don't qualify for state coverage but also can't afford any type of coverage like those mentioned above, also look into Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs); they provide primary, dental, and mental health care on a sliding-scale fee structure, usually around $5-55 depending on your income and the service that is done. The next time you go looking for information, you now know what to be looking out for!
