As I write this, billions are leaving Binance’s hot wallets in what CZ himself calls a likely hack, with Tether and Circle freezing close to two billion of it. Three days ago our validator operator had its keys compromised. Different scale, same lesson: whoever holds the key holds the asset.
Your staked SOL never left you this week, and it never could have. A validator’s keys can’t touch delegated stake. Solana working as designed.
But every validator has one key that controls it, and for three years an operator held ours. When their keys were compromised, so was our validator, and your rewards stopped with it. And whoever runs the node also has to hold its identity key, a hot key sitting on the server, which is where block rewards landed by default. However you split the other keys, the operator stood in the money’s path.
Until Alpenglow. The upgrade that went live this month is mostly talked about for finality and one-day epochs. Quietly, it also changed where a validator’s money goes: votes moved off-chain, and the owner can now point every reward stream at an account the operator never touches. Nobody had used that to take the operator out of the money’s path, as far as we can tell. We did, in a day, because we had to.
The new Solflare validator is, as far as we know, the first on Solana run by a third-party operator who holds neither the controlling key nor the rewards. The withdraw authority sits in a Solflare multisig, so nobody can take the validator from us again, and if an operator’s keys are ever compromised we rotate them and keep going. Every reward stream lands in accounts only that multisig controls. @StakingFac runs the machines with operational keys we can rotate. Ownership and operations, separated.
Staking Facilities are the people I called that night. We built @solanabeach_io with them in 2020, when SOL was under a dollar (for the new folks). Six years later, they’re still the people you call at midnight.
If your stake is still on the old Solflare validator, move it in a few taps in the app. The new one runs at a lower commission, on top of covering the rewards you missed.

Our staking provider has notified us of a security incident on their side, affecting the keys they hold for the Solflare validator. They are investigating. As a result, the Solflare validator is currently not producing rewards.
Your SOL is safe. Delegated stake sits in your own stake account and is controlled by your keys alone; the Solana protocol does not allow a validator, or anyone holding its keys, to move it. No user funds were touched.
We're moving to a new Solflare validator, which means your stake will need to move too. No action is needed now: an upcoming app update will give you a secure, guided path to the new validator, and we'll post here the moment it's live. Rewards are paused until your stake is active on the new validator, and we're working on a compensation plan for everyone who migrates.

In 2021 a handful of us had already built Solflare and Solana Beach, and we took second place at Solana’s global hackathon, out of more than 3,000 people. The next morning my LinkedIn was full of strangers who wanted to invest. I had no idea what to do with that.
So I called Filip. We’d worked on things together before, and he was deep in an idea of his own. He looked at what we had, parked his idea, and came to build this one with me.
A lot of what Solflare is today has his fingerprints on it: the brand, how we show up for the community, and how we kept going through the FTX winter when plenty of people told us to stop.
Now he’s going back to the idea he parked, outside crypto. The most Filip thing he could do.
The team who run Solflare day to day have been building it with us for years. The mission is the one we picked back then: one place to trade anything, anytime, built from Belgrade and Zagreb instead of London or New York.
Thank you, Filip. Go build it.

A personal update: I've decided to leave Solflare.
I will forever be grateful to everyone who has been with me on this journey for the past five years. I'm extremely proud of what we've built together - and how much fun it actually was.
Anyone who's been here since 2021 knows that calling this journey a "rollercoaster" would be an understatement.
We've lived through enough for every streaming service to have its own documentary: from the crazy NFT days and decentralized "everything" to the fall of FTX, memecoins, presidents and, ultimately, trading everything.
There were a lot of hard times along the way. But as hard as they were, they shaped Solflare as a company, and they shaped me.
Surviving the aftermath of FTX is something that will forever stick with me. We had to decide which direction to take Solflare. We talked for days and decided to commit fully to Solana - even if it meant the end of Solflare.
The whole ecosystem rallied and held strong.
Seeing Solana come back the way it did, and our conviction being rewarded, is something I'll never forget.
The company that was fighting for survival back then now has millions of users managing more than $15B in Solana-based assets, and it's becoming the one place where you can trade anything, anytime.
And there were some pretty insane moments in between. I'm quite confident there's no other industry where you can come up with an idea for a drone show displaying a QR code that airdrops $250k to attendees - and find partners willing to join through a Telegram message.
But most of my memories aren't from the big moments.
They're from working with the people at Solflare every day. None of this would have been possible without them.
We started as a small team of 6–7 degens and grew into a company of over 150 professionals (and degens). Through all that growth, we kept the small-team vibe and closeness.
They're brilliant at what they do, and they're also just great people. Anyone who's met the team at a Solana conference has seen that for themselves.
How we show up for the community is something I'm especially proud of. And it means a lot that so many Solana OGs choose Solflare as their wallet. That trust took years to earn.
For me, it's time to put my energy into a different challenge and pursue an idea outside of crypto I've had for a long time, starting in my home market of Croatia.
My co-founder @vidor_solflare continues to lead Solflare, now as sole CEO. He's always had my full trust, and knowing what he and this team are capable of, I'm excited to see what they build next.
