STOP saying “ogre.” That’s from French. The native English word would be “eaten” or “etten,” from Old English eoton, which literally meant ‘one who eats’.

In Old English, a weasel was called a “weosole.” If this word had survived to today, it’d be “weasel.”

The most disquieting fact about Old English: “Beowulf” survives in only one manuscript, and if it had perished like the others, we’d have no idea the poem ever existed. Now think of all the works, just as full of wonders, that are destroyed forever. Beowulf was only a spark.

Can you guess what this Old English sentence says? (Hint: all the words still exist besides the last one.)

Japanese people, I would like to show all of you footage of an F5 tornado that struck a town in Ohio called Xenia in 1974. It was filmed by a 16 year old by the name of Bruce Boyd, and was 1 of 148 tornadoes that spawned across 13 states in just 24 hours. youtube.com/watch?v=2NO66NWZ…

This tornado lasted for 39 minutes, had a path length of 31.3 miles (50.4 km), with wind speeds up to 305 mph (491 km/h), killed 32 people, injured 1,150, and caused $250 million in damage (in 1974 USD). Adjusted for inflation, that is $1.63 billion in damages in 2025 dollars.

In the 90s, tornadoes captured the hearts and minds of many young Americans with videotapes like this, which showed compilations of tornado footage. I would love one such tape to the Japanese Twitter users! youtube.com/watch?v=yOWh2dSh…

The Old English for a beekeeper was bēoċeorl, meaning ‘bee-churl’ or ‘bee-man’. This means the Anglo-Saxons might call this girl a bēomæġden, or ‘bee-maiden’.
I saw a little girl dressed up as a bee keeper at trunk or treat AND SHE HAD HER GUINEA PIG IN A TINY PORTABLE CAGE AND IT WAS WEARING A BEE COSTUME.
