WWI veteran Tom Whiskers became the center of a controversy in 1919 when he disappeared from USS Solace. The captain of the Solace accused the crew of USS Bell of catnapping, but the Bell’s captain denied the charge. He asserted that there was no abduction; instead, Tom had simply chosen a better ship on his own accord. After Tom’s return, the Solace demanded a reimbursement of 10¢ for a missing collar. The Bell’s crew countered that Tom had rubbed against wet paint and taken $2 worth of their “battleship gray” on his fur.
