This is the response by the Honourable Attorney-General of the Republic of Ghana to the joint statement issued by the Bar Council of England and Wales (@thebarcouncil) and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (@cla_lawyers) on August 14, 2025, regarding the suspension of the Her Ladyship, Justice Gertrude A.E.S. Torkornoo, C.J., from the office of the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
Ghana is not a colony 🇬🇭
Our constitution allows suspension pending investigation to protect the integrity of our judiciary. External pressure for reinstatement before the process ends is disrespect to our sovereignty.

The Bar Council of England and Wales and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association have raised serious concerns over the April 22, 2025, suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude.

The suspension is not an act of punishment but a constitutional safeguard to protect the process from undue influence or obstruction. Reinstatement before investigation concludes would actually violate Article 146-10 unless the committee clears her of wrongdoing.
