The fastest way to rank higher on Google Maps: delete your competitors. I don't mean the legit businesses beating you. I mean the listings that shouldn't be on Google Maps in the first place. In most home service niches, there are more of them than owners realize. Search any home service keyword in a decent sized city and look through the top 10. You'll usually find at least one or two listings breaking Google's guidelines, and each one is sitting in a spot a real business should have. πŸ” How to spot them πŸ“› Keyword stuffed names If a company is registered as "Smith Plumbing LLC" but the listing reads "Smith Plumbing Emergency Water Heater Repair Dallas," that's against Google's guidelines. Check the name on their website, their truck wraps and the state business registry to confirm what the real name is. πŸ“ Fake addresses Drop into Street View on the address they're using. You'll often find a UPS Store, a virtual office building with a hundred tenants and no sign for them, or an empty unit in a strip mall. πŸ‘― Duplicate listings Search their phone number in Google Maps. Sometimes the same company runs three listings under slightly different names, each pinned in a different part of town to cover more ground. 🎣 Lead gen listings These usually have a generic name like "Plumber Near Me" or "Dallas Emergency Plumbing," no real website behind them and a phone number that forwards to whichever contractor is paying for leads that week. πŸ“‚ Collect your proof before reporting Google's reviewers act on evidence, not opinions. Before reporting anything, save a screenshot of the listing, the Street View image, the business registry lookup and the website footer showing their actual name. 🚩 How to report them For a stuffed name, open the listing on Maps, click Suggest an edit and change the name to what's on their registration and signage. For a fake address or a lead gen listing, use Suggest an edit and choose the option to remove it as spam or a place that doesn't exist. For someone running several fake listings, use the Business Redressal Complaint Form and attach everything you collected. If nothing happens after a couple of weeks, post the case in the Google Business Profile community forum. The Product Experts there can escalate it internally. ⚠️ What to expect A lot of first reports get rejected, so don't stop there. Resubmit with better proof. Some of these listings also come back after a few months, so it's worth checking your map pack once a month. βœ… Check your own listing first If your business name has keywords in it that aren't on your sign, fix that before you report anyone. It's the first thing a competitor will report back. Most owners spend months tweaking their own listing to move up one spot, when sometimes the listing above them has no business being on the map at all.

How to get plumbing leads from ChatGPT πŸ‘‡ πŸ” Start here Open ChatGPT and type the way a homeowner would: "best emergency plumber in Mesa AZ" "who can fix a slab leak near Gilbert" "affordable water heater replacement Chandler" Click the sources under every answer. Do this for 5 or 6 service + city combos and write down every URL. That's your list. Forget the 300 directory citation packages. πŸ“Œ Where it keeps pulling from In most of my checks for home service businesses, the same names keep showing up: βœ… Yelp βœ… BBB βœ… Angi and HomeAdvisor βœ… Thumbtack βœ… Nextdoor βœ… Expertise.c om βœ… Three Best Rated βœ… Reddit threads like r/phoenix or r/mesa βœ… Local news "best of" lists and city blogs If you're not on the pages it's citing, you don't exist in that answer. Simple as that. πŸ† The listicle angle nobody works Those "Best Plumbers in Mesa 2026" posts on Expertise. com, Three Best Rated and small local blogs get cited constantly. Some take submissions, some you get on by having more reviews than the plumbers already listed, some will add you if you just email the editor. One placement on a page ChatGPT already trusts beats 50 random backlinks. πŸ…±οΈ Bing matters more than you think ChatGPT search leans heavily on Bing. Go claim Bing Places today. Most plumbers I audit have never logged in once, and half have wrong hours or an old phone number sitting there. Match your name, categories, hours and service area to your Google listing exactly. πŸ€– Check if ChatGPT can even read your site Open yourdomain. com/ rchatgpt. comnd make sure OAI-SearchBot isn't blocked. On Cloudflare, check the AI crawler settings too. I've seen sites blocking it by default and the owner had no clue. ⭐ Reviews are the part it actually reads It pulls the wording, not just the star rating. ❌ "Great service, very professional" βœ… "Came out at 11pm for a burst pipe in our Dobson Ranch house, fixed it in an hour" The second one tells it you do emergency calls, late night, in that neighborhood. Ask customers to mention what you fixed and where. That one change in your review request does more than anything else here. πŸ“„ Your service pages need real answers LLMs love specifics because they can quote them: πŸ’° Water heater replacement usually runs $1,400 to $2,800 depending on tank vs tankless ⏱️ On site within 90 minutes in Mesa, Gilbert and Tempe πŸͺͺ Licensed under ROC #XXXXXX πŸ› οΈ What happens on a slab leak call, step by step "We provide quality plumbing solutions you can trust" gives it nothing. It skips you and quotes the guy who listed his prices. 🧩 Tie it together with schema Plumber schema with areaServed listing your cities and sameAs linking to your Yelp, BBB, Angi and Bing profiles. Connects your site to every place it already found you. πŸ“Š Track it ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt. com to its links. Open GA4, go to traffic acquisition and filter for it. A lot of plumbers are already getting a few of these calls every month and have no idea where they're coming from.

The easier it gets to create content, images and websites, the harder it gets to rank. Because everyone can do it now. Relevance is what makes the whole difference πŸ‘‡ 🎯 How relevant you are to the search query πŸ“ How relevant you are to where the searcher is πŸ› οΈ How closely your services match what they need πŸ”— Who links to you and why πŸ“’ Whether your citations are clean and consistent everywhere ⭐ How many real customers review you for that exact service πŸ“ž How often people call you or ask for directions after seeing you Here's what AI can't do for a small business owner πŸ‘‡ ❌ Get the local supplier, chamber or sponsor to link to you ❌ Fix the old phone number sitting on 40 directories ❌ Get a real customer to mention the service and the city in a review ❌ Take real photos on a real job site ❌ Make people search your brand name ❌ Get you mentioned in local news AI made publishing cheap. So Google stopped counting pages and started checking proof. Proof that you do the work, in that area, for real people. That's what ranks now πŸ”₯

You don't need 100 AI blog posts. You only need these 4 pages to show up in Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and AI Overviews πŸ‘‡ 🏒 About Us Every Gemini query pulls entity facts. Who owns the business, since when, where it's located, which cities you serve, what license you hold, everything. So this page is very important. Cover all of it. E.g. "Founded in 2011 by Mike Torres. Licensed HVAC contractor TACLA12345C. Based in San Antonio, serving New Braunfels, Boerne and Schertz." If your About page just says "we care about quality", AI has nothing to pick up. πŸ“‹ Listicle Post Ask ChatGPT "best roofer in Plano" and check where the answer comes from. List posts, almost every time. So write your own. Keep it honest. E.g. "7 Best Roofing Companies in Plano (2026)" You at #1, real competitors below, with clear reasons like years in business, warranty and reviews. 🚨 Emergency | 24/7 Services Most home service searches in AI are urgent. "AC stopped working at night, who is open now" If you don't have a page clearly saying you pick up at 2am, AI won't assume you do. E.g. /24-7-emergency-ac-repair-san-antonio Response time, after hours charge, phone number in plain text, areas you cover. πŸ† Proof of Work | Case Studies | Certificates This is what makes AI trust you over the next guy. E.g. "Replaced a 3 ton Trane unit in a Stone Oak home. Same day install. 5 star review from the homeowner." Add NATE cert, BBB, manufacturer dealer badges. βœ… Build these 4 properly βœ… Keep your GBP and citations saying the same thing That's it. You're already ahead of most local businesses trying to figure out AI search.

A lot of people DM me asking how I get new clients, so I thought I'd just share it here. If you're starting a new agency, this might help you. I don't run any ads and I don't do cold outreach at all. Around 20% of my calls come from X and another 20% come from referrals. The rest comes from a simple setup I've been building over the years. 🧰 Free tools I have free tools for local citation checking and GBP audits, and they bring in 50 to 80 signups every month, sometimes more. 🎯 EMDs and niche sites I've built a few niche SEO agency sites that get decent organic and AI traffic, and about 15% of my leads come from those. Right now I own 11 EMDs and 4 agency sites. Here are a few of them: ↳ gbpaudit. ai ↳ freelocalcitationchecker. com ↳ hvaclocalseoagency. com ↳ orderlyseo. com ↳ homecaregrowth. digital So pretty much every lead and client I get is organic, and it took me 4 years to get to this point. I keep seeing new agencies spend everything they have on ads and outreach and then shut down within a year. If you really want to survive in SEO, put your money where your mouth is and rank your own sites first.

Every small business owner should know this πŸ‘‡ You can rank in the top 3 on Google Maps even if you have -> 0 Reviews -> No Website -> Newly launched business Here's what I do. 🎯1. Primary service This only works for your main service, the one that matches your GBP primary category. Pick that one service and your city. e.g. If you do garage doors, go for "garage door repair in Mesa". Do the steps below and you can be in the top 3 within a month. 🏠 2. Home page Don't have a website? Just build one page for your main service and add that link to your GBP. Put your service and city in the title, the H1 and the first paragraph. Your name, address and phone should be the same as your GBP. e.g. Title: Garage Door Repair in Mesa, AZ | Your Brand H1: Garage Door Repair in Mesa Also embed your GBP map on the page. πŸ“‚ Primary category Get this right and half the work is done. Search your keyword on Google Maps, open the top 3 listings and check what primary category they use. You can see it with a free Chrome extension like GMB Everywhere. Use the same one. e.g. If all 3 are using "Garage door supplier" and you're on "Contractor", you won't show up. 🏷️ 3. GBP name Having your keyword in the business name still helps a lot. But do it the right way. Register a DBA with your service and city, use that name on your website, invoices and van, then change your GBP name. If a competitor reports you, you have proof. e.g. Mesa Garage Door Repair Co πŸ”— 4. Backlinks & citations Google wants to see your business listed on other sites too. Get listed on Data Axle, Foursquare and Neustar Localeze first. They send your details to hundreds of other sites. Then add yourself on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Facebook and directories for your industry. Use the same name, address and phone everywhere. For backlinks, get them from sites in your city. e.g. Join your local chamber of commerce, ask the brands you buy from to list you on their dealer page, or sponsor a local school team. A few local links like these will help you more than 100 random ones. 🧩 5. Schema Add LocalBusiness schema to your home page. Pick the type that fits your business. e.g. HomeAndConstructionBusiness for home services Add your name, address, phone, location, the city you serve, your GBP link, and links to your Yelp, Facebook and other listings. This tells Google your website, GBP and listings are all the same business. Most of your competitors won't have this. πŸ“° 6. Listicles Search "best [your service] in [your city]" on Google and look at the "Top 10" articles on page 1. e.g. Best Garage Door Repair Companies in Mesa Email those sites and ask them to add you. Some will do it for free, some will charge $50 to $200. It's worth it. You get a local link, and these are the same lists ChatGPT and Google AI pick from when someone asks for a recommendation. πŸ”– Save this for later.

Now it's easier to rank a new business than a 10 year old known business with 1000+ reviews. Here's the 5 reason πŸ‘‡ 1. Fresh Ranking Signal 2. EMD Domain and GBP Name 3. Built Right From The Start [Clear Backlinks, Citations, SEO Structure, Responsive site] 4. Location Chosen For Ranking 5. AI Search Doesn't Care About Age

Just starting out or running a small crew? πŸ› οΈ You can do most of your local SEO yourself if someone shows you the right order. Most owners I talk to have already tried: πŸ“ Set up the GBP πŸ“‚ Added a few directories πŸ’Έ Maybe paid someone on Fiverr Nothing moved because the pieces were done out of order or half done. I'm opening this up to 10 owners for the next 3 months πŸ‘‡ βœ… I work with you directly βœ… On your business and your area Comment "Hi" and I'll DM you the details πŸ“©

Every business in the Google map pack has a line from a review under it, with a few words in bold. Those bold words are Google telling you why it picked them. πŸ” Search a specific service, something like "countertop installation" instead of just "kitchen remodel". Look under each business. Google pulls a sentence from a review and bolds the words that matched what you typed. ⭐ So the review saying "the counters were installed on time" is doing actual ranking work for "countertop installation". The one saying "great service, highly recommend" does nothing for any search at all. 🚫 When a business has a review line with nothing bolded, Google found no match. It's there on distance, category or name, and that's the easiest spot in the pack to take. πŸ•΅οΈ Do this for the ten services that make you the most money. Note which competitors have bold words under them and which don't. You'll see exactly where you can win on reviews alone. πŸ’¬ Then change what you ask customers. Instead of "could you leave us a review", ask them to mention what you did for them. The job itself is the keyword. Fifteen minutes on your phone and it tells you more than most paid audits I've seen.

🚨 How to find local competitors ranking on fake addresses (3 min check) - Search your money keyword in Maps - Click the competitor you want to check - Copy their exact address - Paste it into Google Search inside quotes - Look at what else shows up on that address (THIS is the tell) - Drop the same address into Street View - Check for signage, storefront, suite number on the door - Check their review dates for profile age If four businesses share one suite number and there's no sign on the building, it's a rented pin.

Not a glitch if it's an SAB, that's just how it's been for the last 2 years. All my SAB clients are out in the ocean right now. Pin doesn't matter when the address is hidden anyway.
I've been seeing a major glitch with Google service area businesses right now A lot of these businesses are showing up with a map pin in the middle of the ocean..... Wonder if Google is trying to help service area businesses out when it comes to Google Map Pack rankings.

ChatGPT will not recommend your business under 4.3 stars. Google still shows you at 3.5. Why this gap? ⭐ Google has to fill three slots inside a small area, so it works with whoever is nearby. A 3.5 star plumber two miles away still beats a 4.8 star one twenty miles out. πŸ€– ChatGPT has no distance limit. It pulls from a national pool, so nothing forces it to include the average business down the road. It just leaves them out. πŸ“‹ Google hands you a list and lets you choose. ChatGPT hands you two names and expects you to call one of them, so it plays safe and only names businesses that look obviously good on paper. πŸ“Š Going from 4.3 to 4.9 does not get you recommended more often. Under the line you are invisible, over it you are in the pile, and then everything else decides. πŸ—£οΈ The star number gets you through the filter. What people wrote in the reviews is what gets pulled into the answer, which is why 60 detailed reviews often beat 400 that all say great service. 🌐 And it is probably not reading your Google reviews at all. ChatGPT leans on Bing and Foursquare for local, so your profile can look perfect while the sources it actually reads still show 11 reviews from 2021. If you are sitting in the 3s you are not losing rankings. You are getting filtered out before ranking is even part of it.

You can spend $8K on a new website and it wont change your map rankings. Here is why πŸ‘‡ 1. Google is reading your site for one reason, which is to work out what you do and where you do it. That is genuinely most of the job. So the things that matter are the words on the page, whether you have actually named the services you offer, whether the areas you cover appear anywhere, whether the page your Google profile points at is talking about the same thing people are typing into the search bar. None of that requires a designer. 2. Meanwhile everything a redesign is sold on sits outside that. The hero image, the scroll animations, the new typeface, the photoshoot, the color palette someone spent two weeks arguing about. All of it is aimed at a person who has already found you, and none of it changes whether you get found in the first place. 3. The one I run into constantly is where the Google profile is pointing. Nine out of ten times it goes to the homepage and it has been that way since setup. Your homepage is trying to talk about six services at once, so if the profile is fighting for one specific service, sending that link to a page built around that service on its own tends to do more than the entire rebuild did. Takes about four minutes to change. 4. Then there is the stuff that is simply missing. You are not going to be considered relevant for a service you have never written a page about, or for a town you do not mention a single time anywhere on the site. Nobody wants to hear that because it is not exciting work and there is nothing to show off at the end of it, but it moves things more often than anything visual you could pay for. 5. Now the flip side, because the site does matter enormously, just not where people think. Everything above is what gets you into the three pack. The site is what happens after. Someone taps through from the map, lands on your page, and inside about five seconds decides whether they are calling you or going back and tapping the next one down. Three businesses sitting in the same three pack do not get the same number of calls, and the difference between them is almost always the site. 6. And a redesign can wreck you if the person doing it does not know what they are looking at. URLs get changed, nothing gets redirected, the old service pages quietly disappear, your Google profile is still pointing at a page that is now a 404. I have watched a year of work come apart over a single weekend because of this and it is a horrible thing to have to explain to an owner. 7. So the short version. Your website is not the thing that gets you ranked, it is the thing that closes the person once you are ranked, and it holds the information Google needs to file you correctly in the first place.

You are number one in your city and still not getting calls from the next town over. Not a ranking problem. Here is what is actually going on πŸ‘‡ 1. Owners check their ranking the same way every time. Standing in their own shop, phone out, type the service and the city name. There they are, top 3, everything looks great. That search told you almost nothing. You searched from the one spot on the map where you were always going to win, because Google builds the result around where the person is standing, not where your business sits. 2. Move three miles down the road and it recalculates the whole thing. Different set of businesses, different order, and a lot of the time you are not in it anymore. So there is no single ranking for your city. There are hundreds of them, one for every point on the map, and you are only winning the ones close to your pin. 3. Here is the part that catches people off guard. How far your visibility carries has very little to do with how good your SEO is. It comes down to how many competitors are sitting between you and the person searching. Dense city, forty of you inside a five mile stretch, and your coverage dies almost immediately. Spread out suburb with nobody in between, same exact business, same effort, and you hold visibility eight or ten miles out. Same work. Completely different footprint. πŸ—ΊοΈ 4. This is why the standard fix does not work. Someone says they are invisible in the next town, so a page gets built for that town, and six months later nothing has changed. The page was never the problem. Google is not asking whether you have a page about that area. It is asking whether there is any reason to believe you actually operate there. 5. There is also a loop most businesses are stuck inside and never notice. Your reviews come from customers near your office, because near your office is the only place you show up. Those reviews then make you stronger in the exact area where you were already winning, and do close to nothing for the areas you are trying to reach. More reviews every month and the map barely moves. πŸ” 6. What actually pushes the edge outward is slower and less exciting. Reviews from customers in the outer areas, on purpose, tracked. Real proof of work out there, jobs and photos and mentions tied to those places. Pages that say something specific about that area instead of the same page with a different city dropped in. Listings on the sources anchored to that region. 7. So stop asking where you rank and start asking how far you reach. One position number tells you nothing, coverage tells you everything.
