Dear event planners, curators, et al., One of the most disrespectful things you can do to a poet is schedule their performance while food is being served or guests are still dining. Please, understand that there is nothing beautiful about performing to a distracted audience. A poetry performance requires presence. It requires an audience willing to listen, engage, feel, and participate in the experience. It is not background entertainment to accompany someone's meal or dinner conversation. I just had a rather frustrating experience on stage because of this, and honestly, I'm still not sure how I feel. This is a genuine plea: please do not invite me to events where I am expected to perform while guests are simultaneously wining, dining, networking, and having conversations. If the programme cannot accommodate a moment of undivided attention for the art, perhaps the performance should not be on the programme in the first place.
