ALT The US has at least 44 states and territories with COVlD outbreaks. The CDC made large, upward retroactive corrections to prior estimates, and we are now in an apparent secondary peak. States with observed outbreaks include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawai’i, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. Additional states with poor monitoring likely have outbreaks based on high levels in bordering counties in adjacent states.

ALT Long Covid as Russian Roulette Doctors tend to be more concerned about the chance that someone will develop long Covid from repeated infections than they are that a person will get very sick in the acute phase of the illness. Covid can cause long-term damage to nearly every part of the body and repeated cases can compound those harms. A number of studies have shown that each time someone contracts Covid introduces an opportunity to develop long-term symptoms. Researchers often compare it to Russian roulette: Any infection could be the one that leads to long Covid. “Every time there’s a wave, there’s another wave that’s going to follow with patients developing new onset long Covid,” said Akiko Iwasaki, an immunologist at Yale University.

ALT Another challenge during the ERASE-LC trial was managing patients' requests alongside what was operationally feasible for the research team. For example, some PPIE members advocated for mandatory face masking and daily SARS-CoV-2 testing for all hospital staff during infusions. However, these measures could not be enforced because they were outside the scope of local trust policy. In response, the team adopted a pragmatic approach: FFP2 masks were worn by research staff at all sites, with signage encouraging their use by anyone entering research or treatment areas, and lateral flow tests were provided for all staff, patients, and their families to enable testing. The benefits of ensuring patient safety via masking was promoted within site initiation visits...
