🧵Over 4 years ago, I filed a police complaint against the Halifax Regional Police due to their insufficient investigation, discriminatory actions, and apathy after reporting that I was the victim of a drugging, kidnapping, and gang rape by multiple strange men.
CARRIE LOW VS. CST. BOJAN NOVAKOVIC & HALIFAX REGIONAL POLICE - THIS JULY!!! After many years of legal delays, Carrie Low's long-awaited Police Review Board Hearing is finally moving forward 👏

Join our Mi'kma'ki community of survivors, advocates and allies to stand with those experiencing gender based violence, and to remember those lost to intimate partner homicides. Meet us outside HRP headquarters, and march to Nova Scotia Legislature on February 19. /

By August 2024, a shocking 91% of sexual offences reported to Halifax Regional Police and RCMP Halifax Regional Departments (HRD) Sexual Assault Investigation Team (SAIT) resulted in no charges. Out of 2,006 cases reported since 2020, only 324 charges have been laid. /

Yesterday, I sent an open letter to Chief Don MacLean of Halifax Regional Police (HRP) calling for the immediate adoption of the Violence Against Women Advocate Case Review (VACR) model. /

HRP's refusal to implement VACR is not just disappointing-it's a betrayal of survivors and their right to justice. Halifax needs more than excuses; we need real action. Survivors deserve a justice system that listens, acts, and prioritizes their dignity, safety, and well-being. /

Join me in urging HRP to reconsider this decision. It's time to make accountability a reality. Survivors deserve nothing less. #SurvivorsForChange #EndViolenceAgainstWomen #JusticeForSurvivors #VACR #TransparencyAndAccountability

Today, I learned the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the Crown's application for leave to appeal in my criminal case—without providing any reasons. "They receive hundreds of applications from across Canada every year, so they aren't required to explain each decision." /

I'm angry, frustrated, exhausted, and devastated to be left without answers. The justice system keeps failing survivors, retraumatizing us at every turn. 6 year, 5 months, and one week later, it's over. Forever. Fuck the so-called 'justice' system!

I’m starting a new hashtag for cases of officers who cannot & should not be trusted with power. #UnfitForPower Usually they’re kept on the job which sends a very clear msg to women that the institution of policing doesn’t think violating us is a deal-breaker.
This person should have been fired, should have been charged so that he never again can serve in a position like this. Do what is right! Take a stand!

I'm deeply grateful to ppl who seek judicial review of poor police oversight decisions. Ppl experiencing grief/trauma should NEVER have to do this, but it helps others so much. Thank you to the Dorzyk-D'Arthenay families & to @cancivlib. cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/o…

Nova Scotia has officially declared domestic violence an epidemic. This historic move follows the voices of brave advocates pushing Premier Tim Houston to act. Huge thanks to the tireless efforts of Unifor reps & all advocates. /

I remember when a similar thing happened to Ashley Boudreau in Ottawa. Police responded to calls from neighbours but left, despite seeing her killer standing looking down at the floor but not coming to answer the door. /1

Now I need to break it down even more. Which traumatic event is the PRB referring to? The drugging, kidnapping, and gang rape by strange men? Or the traumatic experience after reporting to police? If it’s the former, what are the ‘consequences’ for me? /
🧵“We completely accept how traumatic this event, and the consequences have been for Carrie Low. She has been determined to ensure that the accused were pursued and prosecuted. This is exemplified by her willingness to openly and courageously share her story. /

The statement by the NS Police Review Board should be deeply concerning to all Nova Scotians, as it perpetuates victim-blaming narratives, dismisses institutional accountability, and fails to address systemic failures within policing in NS. /
