It’s easy to take Jane Austen for granted because we live in the world that she created. We struggle to see how groundbreaking and innovative her novels are because they set the template for all modern fiction. Pride & Prejudice, to cite the most obvious example, did more than invent a genre. Anyone who now writes a story in which two people fall in love is either inspired by her or reacting against her. She’s like Tolkien in that sense. But she did much more than that. She perfected a method of narration known as “free indirect discourse” that’s now used by virtually every writer. You have only to read the novels of pre-Austen writers to see what a tremendous difference she made through her use of this technique. Literary scholar John Mullan argues that Emma launched a revolution in form & technique that’s comparable to the innovations of Joyce and Proust. It is the favorite novel of Susanna Clarke and of Katherine Rundell, who calls it “a book that shows as much of the sweep of the human heart, of fear, love, morality, untruth, foolery and triumph as a Shakespearean drama.” It is also, arguably, the novel that invented the mystery genre, having what J. K. Rowling has called the biggest twist in literature. You don’t notice the greatness of Austen for the same reason a fish doesn’t know that it lives in water.
I've read Pride and Prejudice and to this day I have no idea what the hell people see in it. It's not a bad book but I don't see it as being much beyond a glorified romcom. Pointing out foibles? Yeah, every half-decent writer does that. So what is Austen so good at? Liz Bennet hates her mother and thinks her father, while well meaning, is an idiot (Austen doesn't seem to consider there to be anything wrong with any of that). Then there's Mr. Collins the clergyman whom the girls dislike despite his status in life. Okay, no one's entitled to someone else's romantic love but what great insights does the book contain on that? What about any of this is supposed to be so impressive? Dickens would handle a failed courtship more efficiently and entertainingly. Just compare with Mr. Stryver's attempt at marrying Lucie Manette in A Tale of Two Cities.

I have no opinion on how women present themselves, but I think this reflects a broader tendency in conservative culture to naturalize narrow definitions of beauty and attach judgments about character and respectability to personal appearance. Real change would address that.

Today’s world starts to make sense when you realize many people are passionately anti-intellectual. “I get upset when I see someone reading.” That’s anti-intellectual. “I have zero interest in old movies or books.” That’s anti-intellectual. “Chatbots will make college obsolete.” You hate the intellect, my friend.

I'm glad that people are finally calling Altman the criminal he is, but let's not forget - The entire AI Industry committed the "largest theft of labor in human history" YEARS ago & have been walking free since They will never stop breaking the law until they're all in PRISON
Sam Altman needs to go to jail. He presided over unprecedented cybercrimes. He claims his company has a high chance of killing humanity. Jail.

Most people carry 8+ dormant herpesviruses in their bodies right now, quietly inactive for decades. Epstein-Barr. Cytomegalovirus. HHV-6. HHV-8. Chickenpox virus. Your immune system usually keeps them locked down. COVID doesn't respect that lock.

The argument is that a bibliography is supposed to be stuff you've FUCKING READ AND THOUGHT ABOUT.
what is the argument against using AI to compile a large bibliography?--as this is pretty mindless work

I think some of the push to use AI in writing comes from how a lot of non-AI writers think the point of writing is to get published when really the point of writing is to remove this weird thing from your body and teach it tricks

This is why it drives me mad when people say, “Don’t you wish you’d had AI to write your college essays?” No, because writing those essays was a pleasure, because I enjoy looking things up in books and I like learning. I take pride in my work because I’m not a loser.
not to be a fucking nerd or anything but writing academic papers is actually super fun when you have a genuine interest in the topic

Super disappointed in @AARP for encouraging elderly, computer-naive people to use AI for *anything*. Tell them about actual good resources! @canva! @LibbyApp! So many better options!

On Threads they’re debating whether using big words is ableist. I’m sick of this anti-intellectualism masquerading as social justice. People are making excuses to avoid having to do anything hard, but at some point you have to grow up and read and learn and challenge yourself.
