Each year during LME week the world’s leading metals traders come through London. Over the course of the week, a consensus is typically formed on what is the short- to long-term outlook for each metal.
Often the consensus is right, but sometimes it is wrong (e.g last year’s consensus was to be short zinc… and over the past 12 months it has been one of the best performing commodities). This year was probably the first year in a while where a consensus view on copper was not unanimously agreed upon.
The bears talked down data-centre/AI trade demand, saying it won’t meet expectations… while the bulls talk to the shortage of copper supply… no matter the demand outlook. Eitherway, the week ended with ‘risk-off’ selling of equities and commodities.
Copper finished the week at $6.50 per pound… only ~5% below its all-time high. Also by the end of the week, copper cathode premiums into China reached a RECORD high of $158 per tonne (up again this morning to $178 per tonne)… premiums set by @codelco for delivery into Europe were a RECORD $350 per tonne…. And Europe’s biggest copper smelter, @Aurubis_AG, increased its 2027 premium by +10% to a RECORD $347 per tonne.
Also… spot copper treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) reached a RECORD NEGATIVE $300 per dry tonne of concentrate smelted and 30 cents per payable pound of copper refined (“-300/-30”) last week… and we expect to hear news soon of a RECORD low for next year’s annual TC/RC benchmark. We are hearing the 2027 benchmark may settle around NEGATIVE 150/15 (the previous record is this year’s 0/0)… We will know for sure by the end of CESCO Shanghai Week in mid-November.
The trend of RECORD HIGH copper premiums and RECORD LOW TC/RCs is a CLEAR indicator of imminent shortages in copper supply.
So… to echo the comments made by Max Layton of @Citi on copper, “we view any associated risk off-episodes as good long-term buying opportunities.”

Radius Gold's Tierra Roja Copper Project worth a look. Highly prospective grassroots copper prospect in Peru which very recently received authorization to proceed exploration activities and initial drilling. Numerous rock samples over 1% copper over a large area. 🧐😀 #Peru #copper $RDU.V
Last month I joined Felix Ceron in the field while he was helping us collect additional rock samples at Tierra Roja, and I took the opportunity to sit down and record this interview with him at our hotel in Atico.
Felix is an excellent field geologist who knows the Tierra Roja property better than anyone else and has a deep understanding of the geology across the entire district.
This is a useful overview for anyone interested in the geology and history of the district, as well as the Tierra Roja property itself, which we will have the pleasure of drilling very soon.

I know a lot of patient investors have been waiting for this news. Lots to look forward to over the next few months
The Gerencia Regional de Energía y Minas (GREM) of the Regional Government of Arequipa has issued authorization for Exploración Minera Montesclaros S.A.C., to commence exploration activities on the Ferruginosa I-400 concession.

If you take a look at how copper performed over the previous supercycle, these may even be conservative targets.
After many years of not fully understanding the enormous challenges we’re facing in the copper market, we are FINALLY starting to see more realistic price targets.
Last night, analysts at @BMO raised their copper price forecast to ~$18,000 per tonne by 2030… 50% above what the rest of the street believes.
Despite the many factors behind their upgrade, one key catalyst is the “freight train of capex” necessary to support existing mine output.
Copper miners today need to “spend more to stay”… our industry needs to spend considerably more on sustaining capex to offset declining grades as we mine increasingly challenging ore bodies.
But we are still only at the foothills of the Himalayas…

“We own copper. There is no new supply coming over the next 8 years, and we have a big add-on from the data center buildout.”

The problem staring down copper is starting to go mainstream.
Just finished a couple of field days at Tierra Roja with the sampling crew.
A couple of photos here of potassic alteration and silicification in Jurassic andesites ~2.5 km SE of the core zone. Good sense of how far the system reaches.
Caliche cover is extensive, so systematic sampling is tricky, but the outcrop is there if you look for it.
Looks like a porphyry, smells like a porphyry.
Working to get that permit so we can drill it and see what's really down there.
New multi-element results at Tierra Roja support a porphyry interpretation at the core target.
Rocks: Cu with Ag, Au, K and Mo; K often >2%.
Soils: Cu–Zn inverse zonation; Pb–Zn halo around the high-Cu core.
