🚨 Harry Kane on Vincent Kompany following his hospitalisation: “When Vin first arrived at Bayern, one of the things that surprised me was how much he wanted to know about what I was seeing on the pitch. After training he’d call me over and ask, ‘Harry, when the centre-back follows you, what do you want the winger to do?’ I’d explain it, and he’d say, ‘Good. Now tell me what happens if the other centre-back doesn’t follow.’ Sometimes you’d answer one question and end up having a 20 minute conversation. I remember once we finished a session and I told him, ‘Boss, I think we’ve covered everything.’ He said, ‘We haven’t played the game yet.’ That’s Vincent. There was another day he stopped a finishing drill because he wasn’t happy with the pass before the shot. I told him, ‘But I scored.’ He said, ‘I know you scored, Harry. I’m trying to make sure you score when the defender does his job properly.’ And he was right. That’s the frustrating thing about him. You’d go home thinking about something he said and realise he had a point. But the boys started noticing that he wasn’t switching off. You’d arrive in the morning and he’d already watched clips from the previous session. You’d leave in the afternoon and he’d be asking about a young player training with the second team. One day I asked him, ‘Do you actually have a day when you don’t watch football?’ He laughed and said, ‘I watch less on Sundays.’ I asked, ‘How much less?’ He said, ‘Depends who’s playing.’ When we heard what had happened at the training ground, football suddenly became the last thing any of us wanted to discuss. I kept thinking about all those little conversations. The man who’d ask whether I’d made the right run, whether I’d noticed a defender’s shoulder position, whether we’d pressed five metres too late. And now all we wanted was to hear that he was okay. Someone asked me what it felt like to win the Ballon d’or. It’s difficult to explain. Bayern hadn’t had a winner since Rummenigge in 1981. 45 years. And to be the player who brings that award back to this club is something I’ll carry with me forever. But I also know whose fingerprints are on it. Vincent never made me feel like I had to become a different striker. He made me notice things I hadn’t noticed before. He challenged me on days when I’d scored twice because he thought I could have helped the team more. And when I was frustrated, he’d sit down and explain exactly what he was trying to achieve. That’s why I wish he could have been there for that moment. I can imagine him watching the ceremony and thinking about our next opponent before I’d even finished my speech. When he’s ready, I want to put the trophy in front of him and tell him, ‘Boss, this one belongs to you a little bit as well.’ And knowing Vincent, he’ll probably say, ‘Thank you, Harry. Now, about that chance you missed last weekend…’ But seriously, I hope he understands something. He’s spent so long telling us that no individual is bigger than the team. Well, right now the team is telling him the same thing. We can manage a few training sessions without him. We can watch the clips ourselves. We can even get a few things wrong. What we can’t do is replace him. So I don’t want him thinking about Bayern’s next match, or who needs to press higher, or whether I’ve made enough runs into the box. I just want him to get well. The football will still be here when he comes back.”

🚨🎙️Kylian Mbappé on Harry Kane winning the Ballon d’Or ahead of him and Lamine Yamal: 🗣️ Kylian Mbappé: “To be honest, I sat there throughout the ceremony and listened to everything. I barely moved from my seat because, at some point, I genuinely wanted to see whether they were going to invite us onto the stage or simply hand every award to the Spanish players! “Every time they announced a winner, it felt like another Spanish player was going to collect a trophy. And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Okay, let’s see how this ends.’ “At one point, Michael Olise turned to me and said, ‘Kylian, when did the Ballon d’Or become a country achievement?’ “I laughed and told him, ‘Just sit down and watch. We haven’t seen the final award yet.’ “Then Lamine won the Young Player of the Year award. Congratulations to him, because he is an incredible talent. But we were still waiting for the biggest prize of the night. “Finally, they announced the men’s Ballon d’Or winner, and it was Harry Kane. “Honestly, if I had to choose between Harry Kane and Lamine Yamal winning it ahead of me, I would rather see Harry win it. “Not because I have anything against Lamine. He is a fantastic player, and I respect what he has achieved. But Harry represents something I deeply respect about football. He has worked for years, carried enormous expectations and continued to deliver at the highest level. “Seeing him lift that trophy made me happy. I was proud of him, genuinely. But let me be clear: I didn’t travel to that ceremony to support Harry Kane. I went there because I wanted to win the Ballon d’Or myself. “And I think people sometimes forget that. You can respect another player, congratulate him and appreciate his achievement while still being disappointed that you didn’t win. “I sat there watching him celebrate, and part of me was happy for him. Another part of me was asking what I needed to do differently to make sure I would be the one standing on that stage next time. “People might look at my reaction and say, ‘Mbappé should be grateful to be nominated.’ Of course I’m grateful. But I didn’t reach this level by being satisfied with nominations. “I want to win. I want to be the best. And when I lose, I don’t suddenly pretend that winning was never important to me. “I would rather lose the Ballon d’Or to a player I respect than win the sympathy of people who tell me I deserved it after the ceremony.” “Harry had his night, and I respect that. But my story isn’t finished. If working harder, scoring more goals, improving my game and taking greater responsibility are what it takes, then that is exactly what I will do. “I won’t ask anyone to feel sorry for me. I won’t complain about the result. I will go back to work. “Because the next time I walk into that ceremony, I don’t want to sit there wondering whose name they are going to announce. “I want to hear my own name and I want nobody to have an argument about whether I deserve it.”#ballondor

Britain should be a country that makes things. It's how we create good jobs, give more opportunities to young people, and build pride in our communities. That's why today’s announcement from McLaren matters. They’re backing Britain, keeping design, engineering and manufacturing here at home - with plans to build their engines in-house for the first time. Their £500m investment will drive growth far beyond their factory gates, creating a thousand jobs, supporting thousands more in the supply chain, and providing apprenticeships to young people. This is what reindustrialising Britain looks like.

Dolly once wrote me a letter asking if I’d listen to a song she’d written and consider singing it with her. The truth is, I didn’t even listen before I said yes. When Dolly Parton asks, you say yes. When God made Dolly, He broke the mold. This one really hurts. 💔

I visited @AshtonBears during the by-election to hear about their plans and was glad to return last night with a small donation to the fund. Grassroots Rugby League, and sport in general, matters a lot to me. It will be a BIG priority in my time in office. I clearly need to recruit a few more to the @LeighLeopardsRL cause though…

Do you pay tax on the state pension? I've been asked this a lot after last night's @ITVdebate so - The state pension is, and has always been taxable income. - The full state pension is currently £11,500/yr - The standard personal allowance (the amount you can earn before you pay income tax) is £12,570/yr So if you ONLY get state pension income and nowt else, you won't be taxed currently. At the last available DWP data of 12.7m people of state pension age in the UK, 8.1m will likely pay income tax as other income took them above the personal allowance. So roughly two thirds of state pensions do already pay tax
