Steve Lukather turns 69 today! Born October 21, 1957 Steven Lee Lukather was born in the San Fernando Valley, California. As a kid he started on keyboards and drums before his father bought him a guitar and a copy of the Beatles’ Meet the Beatles! at age seven. That album changed everything for him. He taught himself to play and later took lessons, falling hard for guitar. In high school he connected with David Paich and the Porcaro brothers. In 1976 they formed Toto. Lukather became the band’s lead guitarist from the start and has remained the only continuous founding member through all the years and lineup changes. His playing and songwriting were central to hits like “Hold the Line,” “Rosanna,” “Africa,” and “I Won’t Hold You Back,” the last of which he also sang. At the same time he built one of the busiest session careers in rock. He’s played on more than 1,500 albums across decades. One of his best-known contributions is the main guitar work on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” He also recorded with artists like Boz Scaggs, Lionel Richie, and many others while still writing and touring with Toto. He’s released solo albums over the years and continues to play with Toto and in other projects. Born on this day in 1957, Steve Lukather has spent nearly 50 years as both a band guitarist and one of the most respected session players in music. 📸: Steve Lukather
