Want to know the secret to a successful start this school year? Get to know your students! Eat lunch with them. Ask them about their summer BEFORE you make them write about it. Talk to them about personal goals. Ask them about family members. Let them develop classroom rules.

First days of school allow you to get to know your students. Brainstorm territories. #knowtheirstory
Day 2 of school. Brainstorming possible Writing Territories. I go first. Thanks to @NancieAtwell and to Lynda Barry’s book, Syllabus.
