Urban birds are great! How can we manage our landscapes to protect different attributes of their diversity? Check out our new paper in @ESAApplications doi.org/10.1002/eap.2713 @j_r_rhodes @martine_maron @MGEMitchell

Forest fragments provide several ESS even if small. Big trees play an important role in this regard. Paper calls for conservation of multi-functional forest fragments in and around cities.
Thanks @MGEMitchell for a fantastic collaboration!!
@ubcforestry
Excited to share a new paper with @TahiaDevisscher in Landscape and Urban Planning on forest #ecosystemservices and #multifunctionality along an urban-rural gradient. We found higher ES at rural end but no effect of forest fragment size: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

What is a #ClimateEmergency Declaration? Are they doing anything? How do they expose simplistic assumptions about how emergencies are governed in law? If you’re interested in #climatechange, emergencies and law, check out my new article @TELjournal: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

Back from the field, we and co-authors @smsmukler @MGEMitchell, A Czajewska, @keefekeeley, @ajverster,@KaiChanUBC examined a whole range of attributes. I designed #Bayesian multispecies abundance models of birds in @mcmc_stan to examine alpha and beta diversity across farm types

What was the thought process for vaccines mandates in restaurants but not schools, masks for Grade 4 students but not Grade 3 students, universities being able to mandate vaccines for faculty but not students?
Who the heck knows.
But it's here now. Let's hope it works.

"Colleges and universities may choose to adopt their own vaccine policies, or ask for proof of vaccination that go beyond those set out in the provincial health order. Those that do so should work with public health and will be responsible for doing their own due diligence."

Canada has pledged to conserve at least 30 per cent of the nation’s lands and waters by 2030.
We’ll need innovative solutions to make that happen, @MGEMitchell writes in this opinion piece. via @ConversationCA

This new research shows that some of the most critical areas where people benefit from nature do not occur within currently protected areas and may be threatened by current and future natural resource extraction.

“Most research that studies the benefits people get from nature only evaluates where nature has the potential to produce these benefits. Because our work also models and maps human access and demand, we identify where people actually receive these benefits," says @MGEMitchell.
