By “antisemitism in schools” she means her daughter’s school organized a bake sale for Palestinian charities in November 2023 and when she threw a fit and forced the school to agree that all proceeds be split equally between Palestinian and Israeli charities the other parents voted to cancel the whole thing altogether.

I know this is a joke about the whole astrology discourse, but unironically the people I actually hear arguing about their cultural right to beat their children are western-centric white boomers. "God gave me the right to slap and spank my child!"
in my culture, beating children has literally been around for thousands of years. it's part of the culture and it gives people a sense of community and purpose. the fact that you would even suggest stopping the beatings betrays your western-centric colonialist mindset.

(As an aside I don't get why folks on the left would ever defend astrology. Maybe I'm an old lefty, but I don't think mystification, delusion, and lying is helpful to any liberatory project.)

(I have a lot of all time favourite albums, the ones I return to frequently each year. I consistently return to Leaves Turn Inside you ever since I purchased it in 2001, the last year of my undergrad.)

Colonizers have always portrayed resistance as terrorism, savagery, and barbarism. They love to play the victim of the so-called savagery of the colonized and use this perpetual victimhood to justify their genocidal actions.

"What the Israeli occupation promoted of allegations that the Al Qassam Brigades on Oct. 7 were targeting Israeli civilians are nothing but complete lies and fabrications."

Looking at this again and what a terrible take. Not only is it typical of the Jacobin group to echo right wing talking points, but the "seems like a sad byproduct of individualism & therapy culture" is the most asinine, non-investigated explanation.
This hasn't hit South Asians yet as far as I can tell. There are obviously good reasons in extreme cases to cut off your elders, but it generally seems like a sad byproduct of individualism & therapy culture.

The historical communist movement required cadre to break from their family and put their politics and the party first. As a former friend once joked about another friend: "if he can't challenge his family how can he challenge society?"

Was just thinking about this again because I'm watching another 1980s Filipino film where the main theme is how families and elders can suck and become the enemy. Breaking from the family was a really big theme in these non-western films lmao.

Just finished @stevesalaita's second novel, Jerry and Rodrigo Go To War. Even better than his first. It was funny and cynical and sort of reminded me of Dionne Brand's Theory.

But aside from that, really great story. Salaita's shift to a white appalachian narrator from the Arab narrators in his first book demonstrates he can write very different characters realistically.
