It all started with a card game.
A youth coach called Ruud Bröring played cards with Louis van Gaal, then Ajax’s assistant coach. When Van Gaal mentioned that Ajax needed a goalkeeper, Bröring suggested a young keeper, Edwin van der Sar from VV Noordwijk. After a trial period he signed for Ajax in 1990, at 20 years old.
He spent his first two years mostly with the reserves, and was the third-choice goalkeeper for Ajax 1. The first choice was Stanley Menzo, Johan Cruyff’s sweeper-keeper, who had been hugely important in Ajax’s 1987 Cup Winners’ Cup win.
Then Menzo started making mistakes. In the UEFA Cup tie at Auxerre in March 1993, Menzo scored an own goal. Those errors, together with a 2-1 loss to PSV, gave Van der Sar the chance he had been waiting for.
Van der Sar became Ajax’s first-choice goalkeeper and in his nine seasons at the club, he played 312 matches for Ajax, won four Eredivisie titles, three KNVB Cups, the 1995 Champions League and Intercontinental Cup, and even scored one goal, a penalty in a 8–1 victory over De Graafschap.
Today it's his birthday. Conrgats Edwin van der Sar.

🚨🗣️Dimitar Berbatov on Cristiano Ronaldo winning the BOAT Award.
🗣️“I always tell him, if only the fans could vote, he'd win the Ballon d'Or every season he played. That's how much love and respect people have for Cristiano. You can debate football all day, but you cannot deny the connection he has built with millions of fans around the world.
It just shows how much the fans love him. And even if this award isn't an official prize, it shows how good he has been and how good he was. He's a legend of the game, and this award doesn't even begin to justify the length and magnitude of his influence.
People sometimes focus too much on trophies and individual awards, forgetting that football is also about the memories players leave behind. Cristiano has given fans unforgettable moments, incredible goals, and years of entertainment. From his early days at Manchester United to his time at Real Madrid and beyond, he has continued to inspire people across generations.
Whether you love him or not, you have to respect what he has achieved. Not every player can maintain that level of ambition, discipline, and hunger for so many years. That is what makes Cristiano special.
And the beautiful thing is that his supporters haven't forgotten. They continue to celebrate him because, for them, he represents much more than statistics or trophies. He represents an era of football that they will never forget.”

Cristiano Ronaldo have a LION HEART
He was named Cristiano Ronald
First name - Cristiano
Middle name - Ronald
Surname - Dos Santos Aviero
He decided to add the letter 'O' to Ronald and it became Ronaldo
To differentiate from the Brazilian Ronaldo, he started off with C.Ronaldo as the name on his jersey at Sporting Lisbon
While he used the name Ronaldo when he got to Manchester United, it wasn't the same with Portugal
From 2003 when he made his debut to 2008, he was still using C.Ronaldo
It all changed in May 2008, when Portugal officially gave Ronaldo the number 7 jersey
He removed the C and Ronaldo was printed on the jersey going to Euro 2008
That was the beginning of CR7 and the owning of the name Ronaldo
Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima won't have thought or imagined there was going to be a player who would take the Ronaldo name from him
People had to start calling him fat Ronaldo, Brazilian Ronaldo, R9....
It was the media that started the phrase "Real Ronaldo" and "Original Ronaldo"
Before some agbaya legends that should have corrected people also joined the fray
From 2008, de Lima lost the name and Cristiano took over
De Lima might not be happy with it but he has no choice than to accept his reality
That aside, what actually gave CR7 that confidence to add the letter 'O' to his name and use the name Ronaldo
For a youngster, that is pressure on its own. Using a global name like that can weigh you down but Cristiano embraced it and took the name
If he had failed, we'd be laughing at him and call him:
"The man who tried to use the name Ronaldo but failed at it"
But Ororo, the man with the Lion Heart didn't flinch, he rose abouve it
That's bravery
Today, Ronaldo remains the only player and sportsman whose first name, second name and trademark are all very popular
First name - Cristiano
Second name - Ronaldo
Trademark - CR7
Mention Cristiano anywhere
Mention Ronaldo anywhere
Mention CR7
You won't think of any other person aside Cristiano
CR7, the greatest sports personality ever
GOAT 🐐

Cristian Chivu was 18 when he arrived at Ajax in the summer of 1999. He had lost his father a year earlier, and he knew almost no one in Amsterdam. He lived alone in a Holiday Inn hotel room and was driven to training by a driver. After about six months he moved to a house in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, which gave him peace.
On the pitch it started badly too. He was sent off three times in his first months. “I was still a child and wanted to show myself too much, so I made mistakes,” he said later.
Ajax, under Jan Wouters, were struggling. It was the club’s centenary season and the big birthday match came on 19 March 2000, against FC Twente. Chivu was in the starting line-up. Ajax wore historic kits and over 40,000 fans came to celebrate. Twente scored in the 28th minute and Ajax lost 0-1. Twente had a man sent off before half-time, and Ajax still couldn’t find a way through. Ajax finished 5th that season.
When Leo Beenhakker became technical director in 2000 things began to change. In the summer of 2001 he brought in Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Maxwell, Mido and Hatem Trabelsi to the club. They joined a young squad already built under Co Adriaanse, including Andy van der Meyde and a young Rafael van der Vaart.
Adriaanse was sacked in November 2001 and Ronald Koeman took over. He immediately made Chivu captain, at just 21 years old. On 5 May 2002, away at NEC, Ajax won their first Eredivisie title Since 1998. Chivu was photographed afterwards with a torn shirt, mud all over him, wearing the captain's armband with the Amsterdam city's coat of arms.
A week later, Ajax beat Utrecht 3-2 in the cup final, with Wamberto equalising from offside position in the 90th minute and Zlatan scoring the golden goal in extra time. Chivu won the Golden Shoe that year, and was named Ajax Player of the Year for 2000-01 and again for 2002-03.
David Endt, Ajax' legendary team manager, took the unwashed, mud-caked shirt home and hung it in his office at the Amsterdam ArenA for years. It is now on loan to the Amsterdam Museum. As Endt put it: ”You never win with a clean shirt."
Happy birthday Cristian Chivu.
