In 10 minutes, the break in this seminar is over and students will be discussing a published paper of very poor quality. Always one of my favorite items in this course. :)
What's the most ethical and simple way to include a question on gender? The problem with man/woman/non-binary is that the non-binary people disappear (or even get excluded) in the statistical analysis, basically binary washing research. Suggestions?

from: Kremer, J., Moran, A., Walker, G., & Craig, C. (2012). Self-efficacy and perceived competence. In Key concepts in sport psychology (pp. 86-90). SAGE Publications Ltd, doi.org/10.4135/978144628870… So erm.. in normal speaking English, what is the difference?

#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter Please, share! I am looking for the authors of: Fortier, M. S., & Gaumond, S. (2007). Testing a self-determination process model of physical activity persistence in adolescents.

I can only find citations to the "submitted for publication" version, but not the final version, which might well have a different title. Does anybody know who these authors are? e-mail address? :)
I was nominated for a full membership in @SigmaXiSociety and just accepted :). Feels like an odd flex here in the land where flexing is a big no-no. Haha! (also, I was nominated by people I don't know, like @fanellasaunders ) Looking forward to receiving my first @AmSciMag copy!

#AcademicTwitter , when writing about children and their parents, what is the correct and inclusive way to mention the responsible adult(s) in the child's home? (Legal) guardians? Care-givers? Do I put the last "s" between parentheses to include single parent families?

Hi #AcademicTwitter 1. If you hold a tenured position and are honest with yourself, how many hrs per week do you spend on academia-related activities without getting paid for them? Ex: review, giving more feedback on a paper than you were given time for, writing proposals.
1
2. Do you think those activities improve your opportunities? 3. Can you think of groups who would have fewer/no hrs available to them to do the same? I know people know, but I find myself explaining this at least once a week in the office (when expectations are expressed).
Back in 2015, I invested part of my first PhD salary in my mental health; I bought an electrical piano to teach myself to play when needing to dissociate. Was playing Satie the other day. My 20 yo daughter: "are YOU playing Twilight!?" 🤦🏼‍♀️

I usually play with headphones and the journey is the goal, but it was a cozy situation. Hubby was cooking dinner, daughter was setting the table, doggo was hoping for spills. I unplugged.
Undergrad physio's journal club (as part of a methods course). Very exciting to listen to their breakout room discussions. Don't have much to add when we gather. :)
Worked hard to get an offer for a tenured track senior lecturer position (and got the offer). Now, I'm e-mailing back and forth with a member of parliament, because we will be co-moderating the final panel at a conference on the future of ageing and health research. Surreal days

When describing men and women separately in a table or other forms of results. Do you use the word female as a noun? e.g., n=230 (48% females). Why do you not write 48% women? #AcademicWriting #AcademicChatter

If you've seen me use a wheelchair at a conference, but stand/sit/walk when defending my thesis and wondered what "selective disability" that was about, this blog speaks about that and the internal conversations/doubting related to it.

This question comes up a lot. My best advice to those who write a compilation dissertation (a synthesis of 4 sub-studies/articles) is the following: Turn your research plan into your dissertation as you go. From the start.

Format your discussion with bullet points and add any question/discussion you have along the way (if they MIGHT be worth discussing). The discussion writing/editing is where the real work is. Where the real synthesis shows. Most of he actual "writing up my thesis" time. 4/

This method will allow you to make and adjust a GANTT chart of your ENTIRE project (incl. its subparts) and will make it easier to see how far you've gotten on each of the subtasks. This learning experience will then make it easier to plan your last year of writing as well. /end
