We are coming up on peak lactation in much of the south. The timing of fire can drastically affect forage quality during peak lactation. @deerassociation @UFDEERLab @MSUDeerLab onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Great article in the new QW by @HuangMiranda of @MSUDeerLab summarizing her research on aflatoxin in deer corn. It’s real, and it can reach levels that harm deer and other wildlife, but the advice in Miranda’s article will help hunters avoid that.

Average % of a buck’s maximum lifetime antler size (gross inches) by age class, from research at @MSUDeerLab and @JavelinaNation
1½ - 28%
2½ - 62%
3½ - 78%
4½ - 92%
5½ - 99%
This assumes adequate nutrition. Bucks on poor forage might take 1 or 2 more years to reach max.

Deer forage produced by stump sprouts has higher protein and minerals than leaves of a grown tree of the same species, for two years after the cut. Rainer Nichols, one of @DrDisturbance’s @MSUDeerLab students, calls stumps the “closed canopy mini food plot” in his #SEDSG poster.

This tree all along the tombigbee river bank is Chinese tallow. Each plant can produce 100k viable seeds a year that are animal and water dispersed. Plants have been documented to start producing at 3 years of age. A pretty nasty #InvasiveSpecies

This may look nice but those fuzzy seed heads are cogongrass, which is a very aggressive nonnative. In May they are easy to target because they stick out in the plant community. @MSU_CFR @MSUExtService @MSUDeerLab
