Battle-tested. Tradition-rich. Playing their best baseball at the right time. Silver Lake punched its ticket to the 3A state championship game with a gritty 2-1 extra-inning win over Russell on Wednesday. The Eagles, now 19-11, found a way in a classic postseason battle as Miles Kibbee delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to lift Silver Lake to the victory. Silver Lake struck first in the fourth inning when Kibbee doubled home a run, but Russell answered in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. From there, it became a pitcher’s duel and defensive battle between two teams refusing to blink. Dayne Johnson was outstanding on the mound for Silver Lake, tossing a complete-game gem while allowing just one hit and one run across eight innings. Johnson struck out six and consistently worked out of trouble to keep the Eagles in control. Kibbee finished with both RBIs for Silver Lake while Kipton Kruger added two hits. The Eagles also played flawless defense without committing an error. Russell turned two double plays and got a strong outing from Sam Thielen, but Silver Lake’s postseason experience and ability to execute in big moments proved to be the difference. Silver Lake now advances to the 3A state title game where the Eagles will face the winner of Girard and Burlington. #sportsinkansas
