Eighty-four years ago, John Basilone – namesake of Bath-built DDG 122 – displayed the extraordinary heroism in World War II that would lead the President of the United States to award him the Medal of Honor. On Oct. 24, 1942, as Marines fought to hold Guadalcanal against Japanese forces, Sgt. Basilone and his fellow machine gunners fought off a fierce frontal attack by a numerically superior force for two days. Basilone then risked his life to secure additional ammunition so they could continue the fight – ultimately wiping out an entire enemy regiment. We’re honored to have built a ship for such a heroic namesake. USS John Basilone (DDG 122) recently moved its homeport to Rota, Spain, to enable it to be “ready, responsive, and prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex security environment.”

In 1945, an American soldier crept into a German position and stole roughly 50 horses from the Nazis. As he escaped on horseback, he sang a traditional Crow war song while German soldiers opened fire. He wasn't just fighting for America. He was completing an ancient warrior tradition passed down by his ancestors. When he returned to Montana, his people declared him a war chief. This is the story of Joe Medicine Crow..🧵1/5

Today we celebrate the birthday of Admiral Arleigh Burke, a naval leader whose legacy continues to shape the U.S. Navy and Bath Iron Works. A WWII Navy Cross recipient and the only person to serve three terms as Chief of Naval Operations, he is the namesake of the Navy’s longest-running shipbuilding program – the DDG 51‑class destroyers. At BIW, we’re honored to build these ships and carry forward his legacy.

In 1942, an American Navy officer watched Japanese guards beat a fellow prisoner until he was nearly dead. More than 2,000 Allied prisoners were watching. Nobody could stop it. Then one American stepped forward. He offered to take the rest of the punishment himself. The Japanese guards were so stunned that they stopped. This is the story of Richard N. Antrim, the man who earned the Medal of Honor inside a Japanese prison camp..🧵1/6

Bath built is best built! @GDBIW
⚓️ Future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127) sailed away Oct. 11, from @GDBIW and arrived at its homeport at Naval Station Norfolk on Oct. 13.⚓ Amazing work by the DPAE Combatants Team, industry partners, and ship’s crew to bring the ship one step closer to commissioning.

Pleased to be able to say that I was fortunate enough to have met many members of the crew of the USS Castine. She played a vital role in the saving of many lives when the USS Memphis was wrecked off the coast of Santo Domingo in 1916. Many of her crew members attended reunions.
Happy Birthday to the U.S. Navy!⚓🎉 From the launch of our first Navy hulls, USS Machias (PG 5) and USS Castine (PG 6), to the recent launch of William Charette (DDG 130), BIW is proud to celebrate more than 130 years of partnership with the Navy. Here’s to 251 years of the United States Navy, and to the generations of BIW shipbuilders who have strengthened the Fleet and continue contributing to America's defense.

He was just doing his job. That’s what he said. That’s what makes him a hero.
In 1967, an American helicopter pilot had just escaped a landing zone surrounded by enemy troops. Then he learned eight soldiers had been left behind. He turned around and flew back into the gunfire. His was the only helicopter returning. Nearly 50 years later, President Obama would award him the Medal of Honor. This is the story of Charles Kettles..🧵1/6
